Could you circulate the following to PHENIX.

Next week, while we are holding our DC Week, there will be a meeting of the
Gilman subpanel of HEPAP which is debating the value of continuing a fixed
target program at the AGS after RHIC turns on. As RHIC users I think we should
provide strong moral support to the BNL effort to make the case for a
continued program. Clearly the first line must be a program that is
scientifically justifiable - this is the obligation of the BNL managment;
however, if this is approved, DOE High Energy Physics will supply the marginal
costs of operating such a program, and it will have many positive benefits to
us. These include a stronger support staff, more funds for maintenance of the
AGS as an injector, the availability of good test beams, etc. The RHI program
has benefited greatly from the HE support of the AGS over these past years,
and has been very productive with the contribution of only the marginal
support from DOE NP; I have every expectation that the same will be true when
NP becomes the landlord.

I would urge that people try to attend the sessions on Thursday and Friday
to lend the support that will be noticed by the committee. Certainly if you
want to express your opinions you should do that (there is a protocol for such
contributions).

    The key sessions are
Thursday afternoon: 1:15 - 6:00 "BNL AGS Program"
Friday afternoon 4:00 -6:15 "Community Forum"
        (Molzon/Brandenburg)

The meetings will take place in the Physics building Large Seminar Room.
