Summary Gridded Population of the World (GPW), Version 3.0 (v3) Beta consists of estimates of human population for the years 1990, 1995, and 2000 by 2.5 arc-minute grid cells. The 4 products available are:
- population counts (raw counts) adjusted to fit UN totals: GLP90AG (1990), GLP95AG (1995), GLP00AG (2000) and unadjusted: GLP90G, GLP95G, and GLP00G.
- ... population densities (persons per square km) calculated by dividing population count (glp00ag) with land area (glareag): GLDS90AG, GLDS95AG, GLDS00AG
- land area (actual area net of ice and water): GLAREAG, and
- population-weighted mean administrative unit area (in square km): GLMADMG.
These four formats are all available in three GIS-compatible data formats at the global, continent (Antarctica not included), and country levels. A proportional allocation gridding algorithm, utilizing more than 300,000 national and sub-national administrative units, is used to assign population values to grid cells. GPW v3 is produced by the Columbia University Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) in collaboration with the Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT).
This is the beta version of Gridded Population of the World, version 3. An updated final version will be available later. Online linkage to updated information: http://beta.sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/gpw/
