Description:
Abstract:
The Urban Extents database is part of the Global Rural-Urban Mapping Project (GRUMP): Gridded Population of the World, version 3, with Urban Reallocation (GPW-UR), this database provides estimates of the extent of rural and urban land areas on a 30 arc-second grid for the world (excluding Antarctica) by country, continent, or as a global grid. The database is comprised of:

- GLDSU00AGR: population density in 2000, adjusted to match UN totals, persons/sq km * 10, rounded to the nearest integer. The multiplication factor is required to preserve precision in integer format.

- GLUP00AGR: population counts in 2000, adjusted to match UN totals, rounded to the nearest integer

- GLUAREAGR: mean land area in hectares, rounded to the nearest integer

- GLUMADMGR: mean administrative unit area (population weighted) in hectares, rounded to the nearest integer. These data are useful for evaluating the effective resolution of the input data (the size of the administrative unit area).

- GLUREXTENTS: urban mask, delineating urban vs non-urban areas.

This the alpha version of Global Rural-Urban Mapping Project (GRUMP): Urban Extents data set. An updated version will be available in 2005 from <http://beta.sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/gpw>. If you discover any errors or have any issues with the alpha data, please let us know at gpw@ciesin.columbia.edu.

The primary source of data for identifying urban areas is the Nighttime Lights data set from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP). Given the variability of lighted areas, the urban extents tend to be overestimated in areas that are completely electrified (e.g., North America, Europe) and underestimated in areas that are poorly electrified or lighted by other sources (e.g., parts of Africa and Asia). In addition, areas detected in the Nighttime Lights data that have no associated populated place information are classified as rural, which likely results in missing urban areas

The urban-rural extents layer is based on multiple sources of data, including the Defense Meterological Satellite Program (DMSP) Nighttime Lights of the World (1994-1995), the Digital Chart of the World, tactical Pilotage Charts and urban extents estimated from points using buffers. The spatial accurcy both within and among these data sources varies, as does the accuracy of the resulting urban-rural surface. The data are only appropriate for analysis at the regional and global scales (scales of 1:1 million or smaller)

Process_Description:
The urban extents are created by in a four-step process. First, the DMSP Nighttime Lights are converted to vector polygons on a country by country basis and any urban areas from the Digital Chart of the World or Tactical Pilotage Charts (where available) are added to the lighted polygons. Second, the population from the GRUMP settlement points are aggregated to the polygons. Third, settlements that do no fall inside polygons have extents estimated and polygons with a population of less than 5,000 persons are discarded. Fourth, the polygons are combined with the country extents from the Digital Chart of the World or other sources and converted to a raster surface where the value 1 represents rural and the value 2 represents urban
