Issue: Analysis of Grupo Pela Vidda (GPV) activities - a non-governmental organization made up of people living with HIV/AIDS, their friends and families - in its struggle for the rights of people living with AIDS, in a broader perspective of human rights. Project: The GPV operates based on solidarity and volunteer work of many people - whether HIV+ or not - who feel the need to participate in the struggle for the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS. The GPV is an activist group that battles for concrete results for people living with HIV/AIDS. These goals are sought after and achieved through group discussions, debates and publications; launching of campaigns and demonstrations at the national level; specific projects such as AIDS Hotline and Free Legal Assistance; and through attendance at forums such as the National Commission of STD/AIDS, the National Committee of Anti-HIV/AIDS Vaccines and the National Movement for Human Rights. Results: Today, the GPV is a national reference in the struggle against AIDS and is a true mediator in the dialogue between society and authorities in the follow-up of public health policies. The Department of Legal Assistance has worked on approximately 450 legal cases. The GPV activism has motivated its members to openly talk about their experiences with AIDS in schools, workplaces and in the media. The GPV, acting as a voice for HIV+ people, has been very active in the scientific researches that involves people living with AIDS in Brazil. Through publications and technical assistance, the GPV has contributed to the training of professionals in various areas, including those not directly related to the specific discussions on AIDS. Lessons Learned: The openness of GPV to the free participation has resulted in an example of a collective effort in the struggle against the epidemic, a responsibility of the entire society. People living with AIDS, sharing and working together through GPV, have contributed to diminishing isolation and guaranteeing that the dignity and the individual rights of the people living with HIV/AIDS be respected.
