BACKGROUND: To determine the prevalence of Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia in Women infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). METHODS: The present study was conducted in SMS Medical College, Jaipur, INDIA to evaluate the prevalence of CIN in Women infected with HIV. 52 Seropositive cases recruited from Female STD Clinic & Colposcopic Clinic. Each case underwent cytologic, Colposcopic and Histopathologic evaluation. Equal No. of Sero negative cases were similarly evaluated. RESULTS: The patients were in age group of 18 to 36 years, all were married, Husbands of all the cases are symptomatic AIDS patients and 9 cases lost their husbands due to AIDS in recent past. Majority of them belonging to lower socioeconomic group 16 patients (32%) of the 52 Sero-positive Women compared to 3 patients (6%) of the 52 Sero-Negative had CIN. Women were histologically confirmed CIN (P. < .001) No case of invasive cancer was found. The sensitivity and specificity of Papanicolaou tests in seropositive women were 80% and 85% respectively. The result were confirmed by Colposcopy and Histopathology. CONCLUSIONS: Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasis (CIN) is an important biological risk marker in HIV infected women. CIN is common finding in HIV-Positive patient. All the seropositive women and sexual partners of seropositive males should undergo periodic cytologic examination for early diagnosis of CIN. The result of this study suggest that papanicolaou tests is effective and useful method for screening of cervical lesion in HIV positive women. In our study we found high prevalence of CIN in HIV positive patients as compare to HIV negative women. Our data suggest that abnormal cervical pathology is common finding among HIV Positive Women. We strongly recommended that cervical cytology with cervical colposcopy be part of the routine management in HIV positive women.
