Abstract Gol, Brazil's first low-cost/low-fare airline, began flying in January 2001. Sixteen months later, Gol has confounded skeptics who assumed Brazil's high social costs would ground it or hinder its profitability. Elements of its success include an untapped market of potential flyers and the immaturity of the Brazilian airline industry in general which gives Gol ample room for expansion. Also helping are consultations with executives of leading low-cost airlines Southwest, JetBlue and easyJet.
