GOL SERIES

The Gol series consists of shallow, well drained soils that formed in residuum from granitic rocks. Gol soils are on mountain side slopes. Slopes are 4 to 75 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 9 inches and the mean annual temperature is about 44 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy-skeletal, mixed, superactive, frigid, shallow Xeric Haplargids

TYPICAL PEDON: Gol very bouldery sandy loam, rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted).

A1--0 to 3 inches; pale brown (10YR 6/3) very bouldery sandy loam, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; moderate very fine platy structure; soft, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine and few fine roots; many very fine and few fine vesicular pores; 20 percent cobbles, 15 percent boulders, 15 percent pebbles; mildly alkaline (pH 7.8); clear smooth boundary. (2 to 5 inches thick)

A2--3 to 7 inches; pale brown (10YR 6/3) sandy loam, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; weak, very fine platy structure; soft, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine and few fine roots; common very fine tubular pores; 10 percent pebbles; mildly alkaline (pH 7.8); clear smooth boundary. (3 to 5 inches thick)

BA--7 to 12 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) very gravelly loam, dark brown (10YR 4/3) moist; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine roots; few very fine and fine tubular pores; 30 percent pebbles, 5 percent cobbles; mildly alkaline (pH 7.6); clear smooth boundary. (0 to 7 inches thick)

Bt--12 to 18 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) very gravelly clay loam, dark brown (10YR 4/3) moist; moderate fine and medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, firm, sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine and few fine and medium roots; common very fine and few fine tubular pores; 40 percent pebbles, 5 percent cobbles; common thin clay films on faces of peds and lining pores; mildly alkaline (pH 7.6); abrupt wavy boundary. (5 to 10 inches thick)

Cr--18 inches; soft weathered granite.

TYPE LOCATION: Pershing County, Nevada; Granite Mountain area in the southern part of the East Range, about 500 feet south and 900 feet west of the northeast corner of section 22, T. 28 N., R. 37 E.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:

Soil moisture - Usually dry, moist in winter and spring, dry from mid-June through October.

Soil temperature - 44 to 46 degrees F.

Depth to weathered bedrock: 14 to 20 inches.

Control section - Clay content: 18 to 35 percent.

Rock fragments: 35 to 50 percent, dominantly pebbles that are primarily 2 to 5 millimeter in size.

Reaction - Neutral or mildly alkaline.

Other features - The solum is noncalcareous throughout.

A horizon - Value: 5 through 7 dry.

Chroma: 2 or 3.

Reaction: Neutral or mildly alkaline.

Bt horizon - Value: 5 or 6 dry, 3 or 4 moist.

Chroma: 2 through 4.

Texture: Very gravelly loam, very gravelly clay loam, very gravelly sandy clay loam.

Structure: Subangular blocky, or the horizon is massive.

Consistence: Friable or firm, moist; slightly plastic or plastic, wet.

Reaction: Neutral or mildly alkaline.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series. The Basket series is similar except that it lacks a paralithic contact within 20 inches.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Gol soils are on side slopes of mountains. These soils formed in residuum from granitic rocks. Slopes are 4 to 75 percent. Elevations are 5,000 to 7,000 feet. The climate is cool, semiarid with cold, moist winters and warm, dry summers. The mean annual precipitation is 8 to 12 inches; mean annual temperature is 43 to 45 degrees F, and the frost-free period is 80 to 110 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: This is the Say soils. The Say soils are greater than 20 inches deep.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; slow or medium runoff; moderately slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Livestock grazing and wildlife habitat. The present vegetation is mainly Wyoming sagebrush, Thurber needlegrass, Sandberg bluegrass, bluebunch wheatgrass and bottlebrush squirreltail.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: North-central Nevada. Gol soils are of small extent. MLRA 24,27.

MLRA OFFICE RESPONSIBLE: Reno, Nevada

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Pershing County, Nevada, East Part. 1986.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:

Ochric epipedon - The zone from the soil surface to 7 inches (A1, A2 horizons).

Argillic horizon - The zone from 12 to 18 inches (Bt horizon).

Xerollic Intergrades - Meets organic carbon requirement for "Xerollic"

Paralithic contact - The boundary at 18 inches.

Particle-size control section - The zone from 12 to 18 inches (Bt horizon).

The superactive cation exchange activity class was added in 03/2003 to the taxonomic classification by the National Soil Survey Center on request of the Reno MLRA office, without review of the soil series property data. The remainder of this document has not been updated.
