Hello everyone:

FYI, here is a moment of news marking change in the current debate
about testing of ESL students in K-12. Because I work with k-12
teachers in California, I hear the stories of trying to integrate
immigrant ESL students (and their families) into the US school setting
and the influence on funding-related test scores of these intelligent but
new-English-learners, who are also in various stages of culture-shock,
along with the kids who are "challenged."

I know the relationship between K-12 and adult education is varied;
but I have thought for a long time that there is not enough communication
between these two aspects of education in the U.S. From what I have
seen, there is an untapped avenue of communication that runs between
AE to K-12-to students-to-immigrant parents. Here is the article in
today's NYTimes.com.

Changes Made in Test Rules of School Law
By DIANA JEAN SCHEMO
Federal officials said that the test scores of recent
immigrants who do not speak English would no longer be
considered in determining whether a school was meeting
annual targets.
