Seven dbf files have been prepared from the family (2), genus (2), species (2), and common name (1) tables of GRIN. They are currently compressed with the zip-unzip compression-decompression software. These files will remain in our public download area and will be updated weekly. Two additional files have been added for those species names treated by the seed associations AOSA and ISTA.

Five files have minimum content, including the [family, genus, or taxon] name and the [famno, gno, or taxno] number, necessary to set up links to GRIN family, genus, and species reports on the web of the form:

   • family - GRIN family name

   • genus - GRIN genus name
   • gauthor - GRIN genus author
   • gno - GRIN generic number
   • validgno - GRIN number of accepted genus for actual or qualified synonyms (same as gno if genus is accepted without qualification)
   
   
3. taxonno.dbf
   • taxon - name of GRIN taxon spelled out in full (without author)
   • taxauthor - author of GRIN taxon name (for lowest rank given)
   • taxno - GRIN tax number
   • validtaxno - GRIN number of accepted taxon (same as taxno if an accepted taxon)
   
   
4. aosataxonno.dbf
   • taxon - name of AOSA taxon spelled out in full (without author)
   • taxauthor - author of AOSA taxon name (for lowest rank given)
   • taxno - GRIN tax number
   • validtaxno - GRIN number of accepted taxon (same as taxno if an accepted taxon)
   
   
5. istataxonno.dbf
   • taxon - name of ISTA taxon spelled out in full (without author)
   • taxauthor - author of ISTA taxon name (for lowest rank given)
   • taxno - GRIN tax number
   • validtaxno - GRIN number of accepted taxon (same as taxno if an accepted taxon)

   A sixth file, when used in conjunction with taxonno.dbf, provides data on common names as follows:

6. common.dbf
   • cname - common name (with html-coded diacritics)
   • taxno - tax number (matches taxno in taxonno.dbf or species.dbf)
   • language - language(s) of common name (with comma separator if more than one)

   • famno - family or infrafamily (i.e. subfamily, tribe, or subtribe) number
   • validfamno - number of accepted family or infrafamily (same as famno if an accepted family or infrafamily)
   • family - family name
   • famauthor - author of family name
   • altfamily - an alternative family name (which lacks the "-aceae" ending, e.g., Gramineae, Leguminosae, etc.)
   • subfamily - subfamily name
   • tribe - tribal name
   • subtribe - subtribal name
   • cmt - comment
   • created - date record was created
   • modified - date record was last modified

   • gno - generic or infrageneric (i.e., subgenus, section, subsection, series, subseries) number
   • validgno - number of accepted genus or infragenus (same as gno if genus or infragenus is accepted without qualification)
   • qual - qualifier (blank if accepted, "=" if always synonym, "=~" if mostly a synonym, "~" if sometimes a synonym)
   • ghybrid - genus hybrid indicator
   • genus - genus name
   • gauthor - genus author
   • subgenus - subgenus name
   • section - section name
   • series - series name
   • subseries - subseries name
   • famno - family or infrafamily number (links to family table)
   • family - family or infrafamily name (from family table)
   • othfamily - other families into which this genus may be currently classified
   • cname - genus common name (English only)
