Summary
Meteorological datasets are available from NOAA's National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, NC http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/coare/index.html NOAA's National Oceanographic Data Center in Silver Spring, MD is archiving and distributing all COARE datasets related to oceanography http://www.nodc.noaa.gov. COARE datasets archived at the National ... Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, CO http://dss.ucar.edu/pub/toga_coare/ BACKGROUND TOGA COARE was a multidisciplinary, international research effort that investigated the scientific phenomena associated with the interaction between the atmosphere and the ocean in the warm pool region of the western Pacific. The field experiment phase of the program took place from 1 November 1992 through 28 February 1993 and involved the deployment of oceanographic ships and buoys, several ship and land based Doppler radars, multiple low and high level aircraft equipped with Doppler radar and other airborne sensors, as well as a variety of surface based instruments for in situ observations. 1) U.S.-National Meteorological Center (Washington, NMC) analysis and forecast fields, available from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Mass Storage System (http://dss.ucar.edu/index.html) The main features of each data set, identified by an NCAR reference number dsnnn.n, are as follows: + ds067.0: NMC 65x65 Northern and Southern Hemisphere Stratospheric Analyses, daily June 1981 continuing; 12 UTC fields. http://dss.ucar.edu/datasets/ds067.0/ + ds067.1: Gelman's CAC 65x65 Northern and Southern Hemisphere Analyses, daily September 1978 continuing; 12 UTC fields. http://dss.ucar.edu/datasets/ds067.1/ + ds082.0: NMC Global Analyses, daily July 1976 continuing; 00 and 12 UTC; 2.5 degree grid fields. http://dss.ucar.edu/datasets/ds082.0/ + ds082.1: NMC Global Boundary Layer Analyses, daily July 1976 continuing; This data set is a subset of the ds082.0 data set. It includes surface and 1000 hPa fields only. http://dss.ucar.edu/datasets/ds082.1/ + ds084.0: NMC Medium Range Forecast (MRF) Model, Global 10-Day Forecasts, daily 1990 continuing; 12 hourly interval forecasts; R30 fields. http://dss.ucar.edu/datasets/ds084.0/ + ds084.2: NMC Sigma Analyses, daily September 1990 continuing. 00, 06, 12 and 18 UTC, global T126 (beginning March 1991) fields. http://dss.ucar.edu/datasets/ds084.2/ * ds084.5: NMC MRF Model Flux, daily March 1990 continuing. 00, 06, 12 and 18 UTC analysis fields; 24 and 36 MRF 12 hour forecast fields; 384 x 190 global Gaussian grid fields http://dss.ucar.edu/datasets/ds084.5/ 2) Operational analysis fields available from the TCIPO The NMC operational analysis fields for the COARE period alone, are available on one Exabyte tape. This dataset, which has been built from the NMC ds082.0 dataset available from NCAR, consists of 2.5 x 2.5 degree GLOBAL fields basic atmospheric variables over the period July 1992 - October 1993 ONLY (the NCAR dataset consists of hemispheric fields since 1976). Some interpolating of the NCAR data has also been done so that there are no missing days on the tape. Finally data on tape are in Sun binary format. For questions contact George Kiladis (gnk@noaacrd.colorado.edu). 3) Atlas "A Synoptic-Scale Overview of the TOGA COARE Intensive Observing Period November 1992 - February 1993, Based on Snalyses from U.S. Operational Global Data Assimilation Systems". This atlas, which contains wind and precipitation fields was generated by global assimilation systems of the U.S. Navy Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center (FNMOC) and the National Meteorological Center (NMC). Data used in the atlas are also available from Mike Fiorino (fiorino@typhoon.llnl.gov).
