Abstract Nobody can seriously deny that the introduction of full-blown LRT to an urban environment can enhance it fundamentally. Such a development can have a catalytic effect on the area as well as providing good quality, high profile, public transport. The problem in Britain is that there are few places which can justify the expense of LRT. It needs significant passenger traffic densities which simply do not exist in most cities. This article looks at a possible alternative - the Guided Light Transit (GLT) transport. In guided model, it is rail-based and powered electrically from overhead contact wire. The advantages as well as disadvantaged of GLT are discussed.
