Welcome to the first SIAM Activity Group on Orthogonal Polynomials and
Special Functions newsletter of 2006. This year the newsletter is edited
by Diego Dominici and Martin Muldoon. Many thanks to them for providing
the invaluable service to the OPSF Activity Group.

This year the SIAM Annual Meeting is to be held in Boston,
Massachusetts, USA during the week July 10-14. Vadim Olshevsky
(University of Connecticut) is to give a topical lecture related to
"Orthogonal Polynomials". Further, as mentioned elsewhere in this
newsletter, Pete McCoy and Dan Lozier have submitted a proposal for a
Minisymposium on Computation and Application of Special Functions in
Scientific Computing during the Annual Meeting with talks by Annie Cuyt
(University of Antwerp), Lothar Reichel (Kent State University), Lee Van
Buren (Cary, North Carolina) and Jeffrey E. Boisvert (NAVSEA Newport)
and Diego Dominici (State University of New York at New Paltz). Many
thanks to Pete and Dan for organizing this.

I look forward to meeting members of the Activity group at various
conferences during this coming year.

Subject: Vadim Kuznetsov

Vadim B. Kuznetsov (University of Leeds, UK) died suddenly and
unexpectedly on 16 December 2005. He was an expert in the field of
Integrable Systems. MathSciNet lists 45 publications of his, over the
period 1987-2004. Among these there are 13 which have Primary/Secondary
MSC number 33. He became best known in special functions by a series of
papers together with E.K. Sklyanin on application of the technique of
separation of variables in quantum integrable systems in order to obtain
an integral transform mapping n-variable Macdonald (or Jack) polynomials
to a product of n one-variable functions, and vice versa.

Vadim Kuznetsov studied and graduated in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg).
In 1993 he came to Amsterdam for a two-year postdoc position with me.
After further postdoc positions in Denmark and Canada he settled in
Leeds,
first in temporary positions obtained by successful grant applications,
and eventually in a tenured position as a Reader in Applied Analysis.

Vadim was always very kind and enthusiastic. He had 21 coauthors. He
was
very active in organizing meetings, of which two Proceedings edited by
him
have appeared. A third volume, the Proceedings of the Workshop on Jack,
Hall-Littlewood and Macdonald polynomials (Edinburgh, 23-26 September
2003), to be coedited with Siddharta Sahi, should appear soon in the AMS
series Contemporary Mathematics.

Vadim is survived by his wife, Olga, and son, Simon.

Subject: SIAM Student Paper Prize - call for submissions

The 2006 SIAM STUDENT PAPER PRIZE will be presented at the 2006 SIAM
Annual Meeting scheduled for July 10-14, 2006, in Boston, Massachusetts.

The SIAM Student Paper Prize is awarded every year to the student
author(s) of the most outstanding paper(s) submitted to the SIAM Student
Paper Competition. This award is based solely on the merit and content
of the student's contribution to the submitted paper. Up to three
papers will be selected for the prize. The purpose of the Student Paper
Prize is to recognize outstanding scholarship by students in applied
mathematics or computing.

Each recipient of the SIAM Student Paper Prize shall receive a framed
certificate and a cash award of $1,000. Winners also receive $500
toward travel expenses and gratis registration for the meeting.

Eligibility is restricted to students in good standing who do not yet
hold the degree of PhD on the application deadline. Papers entered in
the competition must have already been submitted for publication.
Submissions may be based on co-authored papers.

To enter the competition, a student must submit:
(1) an extended abstract, in English, of the paper. The total length of
the submitted abstract (including bibliography) may not exceed five
pages.
(2) a short vita (at most 2 pages).
(3) the complete paper.
(4) proof that the paper has been submitted for publication.

If a paper is co-authored, each PhD-holding co-author must write a
letter attesting to the student's (students') pivotal role and
contributions to the results.

The student's (students') advisor also must submit a letter that:
 * describes and evaluates the paper's contribution to the literature
and the student's (students') contribution to the paper.
 * verifies that the student (students) meets the conditions of
eligibility for the award.

All papers and accompanying documentation must be received at the SIAM
office on or before February 15, 2006.

Please direct your submission to:

paper at the meeting where the prize(s) are awarded. If attending the
meeting poses a serious hardship, an exception may be granted by the
SIAM President.

Topic #10  ----------   OP-SF NET 13.1  -----------  January 15, 2006
                        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From: OP-SF NET Editors
Subject: About the Activity Group
The SIAM Activity Group on Orthogonal Polynomials and Special Functions
consists of a broad set of mathematicians, both pure and applied.  The
Group also includes engineers and scientists, students as well as
experts. We have around 140 members scattered about in more than 20
countries. Whatever your specialty might be, we welcome your
participation in this classical, and yet modern, topic.  Our WWW home
page is:
  http://math.nist.gov/opsf/
This is a convenient point of entry to all the services provided by the
Group.  Our Webmaster is Bonita Saunders (bonita.saunders@nist.gov).
The Activity Group sponsors OP-SF NET, which is transmitted periodically
by SIAM.  It is provided as a free public service;  membership in SIAM
is not required.  The OP-SF Net Editors are Diego Dominici
(dominicd@newpaltz.edu) and Martin Muldoon (muldoon@yorku.ca).
To receive the OP-SF NET, send your name and email address to
poly-request@siam.org.
Back issues can be obtained at the WWW addresses:
  http://staff.science.uva.nl/~thk/opsfnet
  http://www.math.ohio-state.edu/JAT/DATA/OPSFNET/opsfnet.html
  http://math.nist.gov/opsfnet/archive
For several years the Activity Group sponsored a printed Newsletter,
most recently edited by Rafael Yanez. Back issues are accessible at:
http://www.mathematik.uni-kassel.de/~koepf/siam.html
Given the widespread availability of email and the Internet, the need
for
the printed Newsletter has decreased. Discussions are underway
concerning
whether an annual printed Newsletter or Annual Report should be
instituted.
SIAM has several categories of membership, including low-cost categories
for students and residents of developing countries.  For current
information on SIAM and Activity Group membership, contact:
  Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics
  3600 University City Science Center
  email: service@siam.org
  WWW : http://www.siam.org
         http://www.siam.org/membership/outreachmem.htm
Finally, the Activity Group operates an email discussion group, called
OP-SF Talk.  To subscribe, send the email message
  subscribe opsftalk Your Name
to listproc@nist.gov.  To contribute an item to the discussion, send
email to opsftalk@nist.gov.  The archive of all messages is accessible
