Title:

Description:
Abstract:
At 6 sites at Johnston Atoll in the Pacific Remote Island Areas (PRIAs), quantitative assessment for specific target marine invertebrates were conducted along two consecutively-placed 25m long and 2m wide belt transects, as part of Rapid Ecological Assessments (REA), from 24 January to 14 February 2008, aboard the NOAA ship Hi'ialakai, during the Reef Assessment and Monitoring Program (RAMP) Cruise HI0801. Based on data from previous rapid ecological assessments, a group of target species was chosen for quantitative counts. The species in the list were chosen because they have been shown to be common components of the reef habitats and they are species that are generally visible (i.e.; non-cryptic) and easily enumerated during the course of a single 50-60 minute SCUBA survey. In addition, up to 25 test diameters (cm) of all urchin species are measured. When transects are complete, a roving swim is conducted by the diver to search for non-cryptic macroinvertebrates off transect.
Purpose:
Part of a long-term monitoring program at biennial intervals in which corals, algae, fish, and other macroinvertebrates are co-sampled along the same set of transect lines.
