[Acoustics] RE: currents in lakes from boat with ADP

Hi Ilia,

I work in the technical support department at SonTek. I was forwarded
your email below. I sent you a reply last Friday when I got your
message, but I haven't heard back from you. Your posting generated some
interesting discussion, but unfortunately most of it was not applicable
to your system.

Our records indicate that you received your ADP S/N: M505 last July. It
was built as an autonomous up-looking system. In order to measure
currents with respect to the bottom from a moving boat, the system must
be down-looking and have the bottom-tracking option. Our RiverSurveyor
and RiverCat Mini-ADP packages are designed for that:

It is possible to change the compass orientation of your system to
down-looking using the SonUtils software. You can download it here if
you don't have it installed already:

http://www.sontek.com/product/sw/sonutils/sonutils.htm

Send the command "orientation set down" then Enter. Follow it with
"ssu", Enter (short for SaveSetup). There is no need to open the head
or electronics to physically change any hardware inside.

The bottom tracking option is not a standard feature on autonomous
systems. Bottom-tracking would not help you much for this application
however because the maximum range of a 1.5 MHz system is 25-m. It will
not detect the bottom down to 44-m. You can bring in GPS data into the
CurrentMonitor software over a second COM port (or USB to serial
adapter). It supports NMEA GGA an GGX outputs. The CurrentMonitor
software should be on the CD that you received with the system or you
can download it here:

I hope that helps. Please contact me or our Support department at
support at sontek.com if you have any questions. Let me know if you are
interested in adding bottom-tracking and I can send you a formal quote.

Best Regards,

Ben Macone

Subject: [Acoustics] RE: currents in lakes from boat with ADCP

Dear All,

We just started with our new Sontek ADP 1.5 MHz and urgently need to
make a survey in a couple of weeks to study current patterns in lake
(depth up to 44m) from boat.
Until now I did not used this instrument, but heard that one can measure
currents using bottom as reference + GPS coordinates. What are
restrictions? (bottom depth, boat/current speed, etc).
Can somebody give us advises about the best way of sampling performance,
data collection and calculation procedure. Relevant soft?
All suggestions will be more than welcome.
Cheers, Ilia
