FINAL ANNOUNCEMENT
National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) Research Forum
February 5-7, 1997, PPPL
I. Purpose and Motivation
The NSTX Research Forum will provide an efficient opportunity for
the National NSTX Research Program.
Your contributions to and participation in the NSTX Research Forum is cordially invited. There will be a $30. registration fee to cover supplies and printing.
The NSTX, beginning in FY 1999, will be capable of testing the scientific principles of the new ST plasma regime for magnetic fusion. For this regime it is possible to have stable ultra high beta plasmas with high, well-aligned self-driven current fractions; confinement associated with strong magnetic well, magnetic shear, and field line curvature; noninductive startup and current drive involving minimized magnetic fluxes and helicity per plasma current; and impurity control through scrape-off layers characterized by strong mirror-ratio and field-line curvature. Opportunities for discovery, innovation and advancement in fusion and plasma sciences are therefore indicated. The NSTX Research Forum will be an important step for the U.S. fusion expertise to begin to take advantage of these opportunities.
II. NSTX Working Groups and Charge
The centerpiece of the Forum will be the open topical NSTX Working Group Sessions. The Working Groups, guided by the NSTX scientific research mission and initial research goals, will serve to
The Working Group topics are organized as follows:
WG1. Current Formation and Sustainment by Slow (DC) Mechanisms
WG2. Heating, Current Formation and Sustainment by Fast Mechanisms
WG3. Magnetics and Stability Limits
WG4. Transport and Fluctuations
WG5. Divertor, Scrape-Off Layer, and Fueling
Each Working Group report should contain
III. Researchers’ Input to the Working Groups
Researchers interested in participating in the NSTX Research Program are encouraged to send (via email if possible) input to the coordinator(C), the Assistant(A), the members of the Working Group, and Sallie Citrolo, in the appropriate topic. The WGs will organize the WG session agenda based on the input. Please limit each input to one-page synopsis describing:
