CBP Officers at Newark Liberty International Seize 35 Pounds of Hashish from India

contacts for this news releaseNewark, N.J. — On Friday, Customs and Border Protection officers at Newark Liberty International Airport targeted and examined an express consignment shipment that was manifested as "Religious Lama Books".
The overnight shipment originated in India and consisted of three boxes. Examination of the shipment revealed 63 red rectangular books wrapped in yellow cloth. The books were unusually heavy and thick. Upon probing of the books, CBP officers discovered a hard brown substance which field tested positive for hashish.CBP officers seized more than 35 pounds of hashish with an approximate street value of $450,000. The shipment was bound for a private address in Ontario, Canada. No arrests have been made in this case.“This seizure further highlights the skills of the CBP officers on the front lines and their keen ability to identify unique concealment methods that are used to smuggle narcotics through the United States,” said Robert E. Perez, director of field operations for CBP in New York.U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
