Figure used as cover for GRL Vol. 28, Iss. 21: Maps of the three components (Br, Bt, Bp) of the magnetic field at mapping orbit altitude (400 km). The maps have extraordinary signal fidelity and were compiled from MGS MAG-ER mapping phase observations by simple 1x1 degree binning and averaging. The planet is viewed in orthographic projection from 30 degrees south and 180 degrees east longitude. The maps are dominated by features with large spatial scale but contain useful information down to scale lengths of a few degrees.
