Sandra,

Sorry about that. Evidently, it's not so easy to get to. Short cut is to use the Search box at the top of the OTAN page once you've signed in. Type in "Talking with the Police" and then click on option 4 for the teacher's guide and 5 for the student workbook. Otherwise, the pathway is to click on 1) Teaching Tools and Resources, 2) by Program Type, 3) ESL/Citizenship/EL Civics, 4) Lessons Plans - California, 5) ESL, 6) Government and Law, and then you'll find the listing alphabetically.

Cathy-I went to the site, signed in, but what is the entire package called. I could not find the section you are talking about. How should I look? Sandi Grant, Utah

Several years ago I developed some ESL materials called "Talking with the Police" which includes a chapter on traffic stops. The materials can be downloaded from OTAN at:

I'd love to have it too! I work with refugees from several countries. Many learn to drive for the first time shortly after they arrive in the US and know very little about safe police interaction!

Every semester I give my students a handout that explains what to do if they are stopped by the police. Be unfailingly polite!!! Do not complain on site. Get the officer's badge number or license plate number and you can complain later to the police station.

Do NOT answer any questions on site except your name and address.
We read (together) the rights that all officers must read to those they are arresting. We discuss what they mean. We talk about public defenders whihc most of them do not know about.

I present this in the context of a teenager who may possibly do something illegal in the name of "fun".
