Topic #1 ----------------- OP-SF NET ----------------- May 2, 1994
From: Tom H. Koornwinder <thk@fwi.uva.nl>
Subject: Editorial note

There has been some discussion if lists of contents of current issues of
journals should be incuded in OP-SF Net, as far as these journals are
completely or partially within the field of our Activity Group. For the
moment the net editor will keep to the following policy.
1. A list of contents will only be given if it concerns some special
issue which is very relevant for our field. As an example, see the
list of contents of the special Askey-Olver issue of SIAM J. Math.
   Anal. in topic #12 below.
2. As for preprints, the new additions in W. Al-Salam's archive will be
   regularly listed in OP-SF Net.

If you still would like to see the lists of contents of some relevant
journals on your screen, then you may consider to subscribe to AT-NET
(the news net on approximation theory), which indeed offers this
service. Subscribe to this Net by sending email to

with the command

in the body of the message.

Subject: Future Minisymposia: call for suggestions of topics

The Program Director of the Activity Group is interested in getting

for the 1995 Annual Meeting (Louisville, October 16-19) and the ICIAM
meeting in Hamburg, Germany (July 3-7, 1995). Send suggestions to Martin
Muldoon <muldoon@mathstat.yorku.ca>.

From: Tom H. Koornwinder <thk@fwi.uva.nl>
Subject: Survey of Numerical Evaluation of Special Functions

There is a very useful forthcoming paper:
   F.W.J. Olver and D.W. Lozier,
   "Numerical evaluation of special functions",
   to appear in:
   Mathematics of Computation 1943-1993: A half-century of
   computational mathematics,
   Walter Gautschi (ed.),
Proceedings of Symposia in Applied Mathematics,
   American Mathematical Society, Proidence, RI.

Abstract:
Higher transcendental functions continue to play varied and important
roles in investigations by engineers, mathematicians, scientists and
statisticians. The purpose of this paper is to assist in locating useful
approximations and software for the numerical generation of these
functions, and to offer some suggestions for future developments in this
field.

Contents:
1. Introduction
2. Mathematical developments
3. Packages, libraries and systems
(a general survey of software libraries and packages that include
   collections of special functions)
4. Functions of one variable
5. Functions of two or more variables
(In sections 4 and 5 the functions are treated individually.
The authors list software that is already available and readily
   programmable numerical approximations.)
6. Testing and library construction
7. Future trends

From: Wolfram Koepf <koepf@sc.zib-berlin.de>
Subject: Mathematica and Maple packages on formal power series

Two packages have been completed on formal power series, one for
Mathematica and one for Maple. These packages, together with latex files
of papers describing them, are available from Waleed Al Salam's ftp-site
(see topic #13) in directories pub/koepf/pseries (for Mathematica) and
pub/koepf/fps (for Maple).

The Mathematica package PowerSeries.m by Wolfram Koepf deals with
- the algorithmic calculation of differential equations,
- the algorithmic calculation of Laurent-Puiseux series,
- the algorithmic calculation of recurrence equations,
- and the calculation of generating functions.
All algorithms work with special functions of the hypergeometric type.
The accompanying paper is:
W. Koepf, "A package on formal power series". Mathematica Journal 4
(May 1994), to appear.

The Maple package FPS deals with
- the algorithmic calculation of differential equations,
- the algorithmic calculation of Laurent-Puiseux series,
- and the algorithmic calculation of asymptotic series.
All algorithms work with special functions of the hypergeometric type.
It is written by Dominik Gruntz. The accompanying paper is:
