Topic #1 ---------------- OP-SF NET ----------------- March 28, 1995
From: OP-SF Net Editor <thk@fwi.uva.nl>
Subject: Editorial

Recently there has been some discussion between the officers of the
SIAM Activity Group on Orthogonal Polynomials and Special Functions
about the tasks and mission of our Activity Group and if these are
sufficiently reflected by our activities (Newsletter, OP-SF Net,
symposia). On the one hand we want to be a world-wide forum for all
kinds of activities in Orthogonal Polynomials and Special Functions,
both pure and applied. On the other hand we are an Activity Group
within SIAM, which is a US-based organisation explicitly aiming at the
advancement of the applications of mathematics. Therefore we have
certain obligations that the applied part of our field will get enough
attention in our two news media and in our symposia.

It is our impression that we have not fully met these obligations
during the past few years. One reason is that most of the present
officers are academia based and have their research interests in a
rather theoretical direction.

However, one other reason is the lack of feedback from your side.
For instance, OP-SF Net is open for your contributions, but major parts
of the past issues were filled by my own news gathering.
It is unavoidable that this editorial news gathering is biased, because
news about activities close to my research interests will reach me
more probably than other news.

Therefore, OP-SF Net would become more balanced if more of you, and in
particular those who apply orthogonal polynomials and special
functions in natural sciences, engineering, economics, etc., would
contribute to the Net. It is not just announcements of meetings I
would like to see, but also announcements of books, software, etc.
Furthermore, please do not hesitate to send your research questions to
OP-SF Net. It is quite probable that one of the readers can answer
your question, or give at least a hint. From now on, OP-SF Net will
also publish answers to questions posed in the Net.

Finally, the officers of the Activity Group would like to hear your
opinion about the direction in which the Activity Group should move.
It is in particular important to hear about this in the present year,
since the various officers' positions will be open for election
this year. You may either write to one of the officers privately about
this, or send your opinion to OP-SF Net or the Newsletter for
publication.

Topic #8 ---------------- OP-SF NET ----------------- March 28, 1995
From: Paul Nevai <nevai@math.ohio-state.edu>
Subject: Request for donations for a memorial dedicated to Gabor Szego

(Net Editor's Disclaimer:
Inclusion of this request in OP-SF Net does not imply that
the SIAM Activity Group on Orthogonal Polynomials and
Special Functions formally endorses this message.)

Dear Friends:

Gabor Szego (more accurately G\'abor Szeg\H{o}) was born one hundred
years ago on January 20, 1895, in Kunhegyes, Hungary.

This is to solicit your generous donations for some type of a memorial
(most likely a bronze relief to be set up in Kunhegyes in front of the
city library) dedicated to Gabor Szego. I understand that such a
memorial will cost in the neighborhood of three to five thousand US
dollars.

Please send me whatever you can afford, say, $10 or $25 or $100 or
more (perhaps in cash but preferably by checks payable to Paul Nevai,
Dept Math - OSU, Columbus, Ohio 43210-1174, U.S.A.) and I will make
sure that all the money collected will be used for that purpose.

If you send me $25 or more, you will get a photograph of this memorial
signed by a selected mathematician such as Dick Askey or Paul Erdos or
Samuel Karlin or Peter Lax or Lee Lorch or Gilbert Strang or Harold
Widom or one of the children of Gabor Szego.

Depending on the money collected, I promise to add a substantial amount
from my own resources. My final goal is in the neighborhood of 5K.

Sincerely,
Paul Nevai

P.S. This message has been endorsed by Professors Dick Askey, Paul Erdos,
Samuel Karlin, Peter Lax, Lee Lorch, Gilbert Strang, and Harold Widom.

Topic #9 ---------------- OP-SF NET ----------------- March 28, 1995
From: Paul Nevai <nevai@math.ohio-state.edu>
Subject: J. Approx. Theory: WWW Home Page and Table of Contents

(edited by Net Editor)

The Journal of Approximation Theory WWW home page address
(see OP-SF Net 2.1, Topic 13) has changed once more. The present
address is

  http://www.math.ohio-state.edu/JAT

A new facility, one click away from this home page, is the
Table of Contents of all issues of J. Approx. Theory
(starting with Volume 1, Number 1, June 1968). The Table is arranged in
various convenient formats for on-line reading and for downloading.

There is also available a simple shell program for searching the
Table, which you can use in conjunction with downloading the file
"jat_toc" containing all the TOCs. This shell program is available
from Paul Nevai <nevai@math.ohio-state.edu>.
