Summary (Summary adapted from the Scout Report Vol. 3, No. 7, December 8, 1999 and the Coeoptera WWW site)
Roughly "one in four animals" on earth is a beetle. However, many species still remain undescribed. This resource, from the US Department of Agriculture's Systematic Entomology Library (SEL), houses half a dozen Internet-based resources on Coleoptera. ... Resources are solid but vary in depth. The collection of sites covers wide ground: Leaf chafer scarabs, a complete online Handbook of Palearctic Flea Beetles, Elaphidiini Beetles ("a large tribe of primarily nocturnal longhorned woodboring beetles"), Coleoptera (museum) collections, and two sites on Coleoptera researchers.
Various links from the home page lead the user to specific information about the group represented. The Leaf Chafer icon links the user to a site hosted by the National Museum of Natural History. This site contains detailed information about the habits and appearance of leaf chafers as well as search capabilities for the online Smithsonian collection. The Handbook of Palearctic Flea Beetles link provides valuable information on flea beetle identification, morphology, distribution, and host plants. Similarly, the Elaphidiini Beetle Site introduces the user to the generic diversity in the Elaphidiini, a large tribe of primarily nocturnal longhorned woodboring beetles. Other links include the National Coleoptera Collection which contains a history of the collection, collection profiles, curators of familes and databases/inventories of the museum holdings. The Beetle Bookshelp is a link to current staff publications listed by year and the Combined Coleoptera Staff link provides the user with the Entomologists associated with the Coleoptera web sites.
