October 3, 2003

Tbilisi - The United States Department of Defense is providing $100,000 worth of Hepatitis A vaccinations as humanitarian aid to the children of Georgia. Children from the ages of 2-7 in the Akhaltsikhe area will be given free vaccinations on Monday, October 6th at the Central Clinic in Akhaltsikhe. This area had a Hepatitis A outbreak last year, making the vaccinations especially important. The vaccinations will be administered by local doctors. The Adjutant General of the State of Georgia, General Poythress, will be in Akhalsitke to observe the vaccinations.

The United States European Command based in Stuttgart, Germany provided the funding for procuring the Hepatitis A vaccines through a $100,000 humanitarian assistance grant to the United States Office of Defense Cooperation. The USODC office works for EUCOM and U.S. Ambassador Richard Miles. The USODC manages the Joint Contact Team Program which also includes the State Partnership Program (SPP) that aligns the State of Georgia, USA with the Country of Georgia. This particular project of immunizing Georgian children against the Hepatitis A virus exemplifies the commitment of the United States of America in providing humanitarian assistance to the people of Georgia.
