MESSAGE:ALTHOUGH IT IS COLD, THE SEAS HAVE LAID DOWN FOR US GIVING US THE CHANCE TO REALLY CRANK OUT SOME STATIONS. BOTH WATCHES ARE IN THE GROOVE AND PROCESSING STATIONS WITH
GREAT EFFICIENCY. WE ARE CURRENTLY PROCESSING OUR LAST DEEPWATER STATION FOR THIS LEG AND WILL BE SPENDING THE REMAINDER OF THE TRIP PICKING UP THE "INSHORE" STATIONS EAST OF NEW
JERSEY AND SOUTH OF LONG ISLAND. THIS LAST DEEPWATER TOW HAS GIVEN US PLENTY OF MONKFISH TO WORK WITH, OVER 208KG. WE ALSO ENCOUNTERED 216KG OF RED CRABS AT THIS STATION. SO FAR WE HAVE CAUGHT 3 OF THE ELUSIVE BLACKFIN MONKFISH. THEY WILL BE RETURNING TO THE LAB WITH US FOR FURTHER STUDY. IT IS A BEAUTIFUL LATE WINTER TO BE AT SEA. THE GANNETS AND GULLS HAVE BEEN
CONSTANT COMPANY AND EVERYONE HAS BEEN ENJOYING WATCHING THE GANNETTS FEED.
ENJOY YOUR WEEKEND, I KNOW WE WILL.

The Mary K continues to bang out the offshore stations. The weather has improved and they are making good progress, finishing up the deep stuff near Hudson Canyon. They have one more deep tow and then they will head up onto the shelf. Hopefully they will have the opportunity to do a depletion experiment or two in the next couple of days. Thursday, 12 March 2009 Just spoke with Geoff and the work is coming along on the Mary K. He has been struggling with some computer issues and label printing problems but it has not stopped them from getting stations done. The wind came up early this morning and they had to suspend fishing for about 10 hours, but the seas are coming down and they are getting ready to set out again.soon. They have also had problems with great amounts of fixed gear in some sampling areas. This has caused them to move inshore/offshore on a day/night cycle so they can do the stations near gear when they can see the highflyers well. Considering all the hurdles, they are doing great. Station progress so far:

Station, Strata-tow, Kg, Number, Notes
57, 6-5, 17.1, 5
58, 6-6, 34.0, 25

62, 6-9, 21.1, 13

heading to 8-1

Wednesday, 3 March 2009 The Mary K left Cape May early yesterday and resumed sampling on the shelf off southern New Jersey. They have completed 6 stations since that time (see below) with few monks in the mix. They have another 3 stations lined up before they pack it in around 6 pm. If that schedule holds they should arrive in New Bedford around 3 pm tomorrow.

Considering the weather this was another very successful leg. Great job all around.

Tuesday, 3 March 2009 The crew of the Mary K broke off work at about 5pm on Saturday due to awful weather. They headed toward Cape May and arrived in port about 8am Sunday. They spent Sunday and Monday tied up at the Lund Fisheries facility. The plan was to head out this morning and continue working.

Sixteen station were accomplished between the Thursday message and breaking off on Saturday - pretty impressive, especially since many of the tows were in deep water. Here are the details for the tows.

From Rob Johnston

Just touched base with Nathan on the Mary K. They continue to make significant progress despite some minor computer problems and having to jog in rough seas for 10 or 12 hours Sunday into Monday. The stations accomplished since the last message are as follows:

Station Strata-Tow
18 67-1
19 68-1
20 67-2
21 66-1
22 71-1
23 70-2
24 66-3
25 69-3
26 70-3

They are now heading to 72-2. The weather is forecast to deteriorate so after completing this station they will be heading for home with an ETA of early Friday morning.

Considering they lost 2.5 days due to weather I think this has been an extremely successful leg.
Rob

Tuesday, 17 February 2009 After spending Thursday and Friday in Norfolk due to high winds and seas, the F/V Mary K headed back out on Saturday morning. From Rob Johnston

Just heard from Nate. They are in Norfolk since early this morning. The weather has deteriorated significantly (sound familiar?).

Apparently the CG arranged for them to tie up at the Little Creek Sub-base. The fella on watch at the base however forgot to tell the MP's who promptly boarded the vessel in a flurry at sunrise. At one point there were 6 patrol cars, lights flashing on the dock. The MP's made multiple inspection!!! Nate said he got some pics. So much for getting some rest...

They are moving over to AMC now and expect to be berthed next to our old friend Albatross IV. The weather looks to improve tomorrow so hopefully they will head out in an effort to complete the southern most stations.

They completed 4 stations (after a loooong steam) before breaking off:

Station Strata-tow kg (approx.) Number
1 65-1 0 0
2 65-6 0 0
3 65-2 30 5
4 65-3 3 1

I'll keep you all updated

Rob

P.S. It looks like the weather will deteriorate in the GOM today. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Endurance head into port sometime soon. I expect to talk to Sean at 11am.

Anne,
All is well here. We took the long steam south and ran into some weather last night so moved inshore. We are on our third station 65-2. We complete 65-1 and 65-6 earlier. All equipment is running as it should and the fisherman and scientists are getting used to the routine. It's a little slow now but we'll pick up the pace as time goes on. Looking at some big wind later today so we are working our way inshore to find some protection. More later.
