Abstract |
This article describes the renovation of a small section of the Ferrovias Guatemala (FVG) rail line that runs from El Chile to Guatemala City, Guatemala. The line, which was originally built in the early 1900s, had fallen into a state of disrepair and was eventually abandoned by the Guatemalan government in 1996. In 1997, however, the Pittsburgh-based Railroad Development Company (RDC) made an agreement with the government to restore the railroad. The RDC pumped $10 million into the project and promised the government 10% of the gross revenue stemming from the trains' operation. Work began in May 1998 to bring the railroad back, but there was some obstacles: railroad workers found included squatters living on the pre-existing track, landslides blocked the right-of-way, and threatening insects interfered with construction. Despite this, the track was eventually finished, and the first train ran on April 15, 1999 amidst a public celebration. |
