CBP Border Patrol Seizes More than Four Thousand Pounds of Marijuana

Tucson, Ariz. — U.S. Customs and Border Protection Border Patrol agents seized more than one ton of marijuana in the last two days. The marijuana has an estimated value of more than $3.5 million.

Last night, at 10:00, CBP Border Patrol agents assigned to the Ajo Station encountered two vehicles loaded with marijuana. The agents were working on the Tohono O’ohdam Indian Reservation, when they discovered two abandoned vehicles. When the agents approached the vehicles, a Chevy Silverado and a GMC pick-up truck, they discovered 118 bundles of marijuana. Records checks on the vehicles revealed that the Chevy Silverado had been reported stolen.

The stolen vehicle was turned over to the Tohono O’ohdam Police Department. The GMC pick-up truck was seized and transported to the Ajo Border Patrol station. The marijuana was transported to the Ajo Border Patrol station where it was weighed and eventually turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration. The total weight of marijuana is 2,776.9 pounds with an estimated valued of $2,221,520.

This morning, at 2:30 a.m., agents at the Ajo station seized another 1,724 pounds of marijuana from a 2000 Chevy Suburban that the agents encountered on the Tohono O’ohdam Indian Reservation. Agents were following the tire tracks of the vehicle when they requested air support from the National Guard who responded and assisted in the search.

Agents encountered the abandoned vehicle and discovered 120 bundles of marijuana. The marijuana is worth an estimated $1,379,200. A search for the driver was negative and no arrests were made. The vehicle was seized and transported to Ajo Border Patrol station and the marijuana is going to be turned over to the DEA.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation’s borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
