Gibson named associate lab director for APS

J. Murray Gibson has been appointed associate laboratory director for the Advanced Photon Source (APS).

Gibson has been the director of the Materials Science Division since 1998. He oversaw Argonne's early efforts in nano-sciences and fostered the development of the X-ray Nanoprobe, which will be the world's most powerful X-ray microscope for studying structures at nanometer scales. As one of the partners in the Basic Energy Sciences Synchrotron Radiation Center Collaborative Access Team, the Materials Science Division is a major user of the APS.

"Murray's previous experience as a university faculty member, and in industrial research and management, gives him a broad perspective on the scientific user community," said Argonne Director Hermann Grunder. "As a materials scientist, Murray has gained international recognition for his use of electron diffraction to study thin films and interfaces."

Before coming to Argonne, Gibson was associate director of the Frederick Seitz Materials Research Laboratory and professor of materials science and physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Prior to his university appointment in 1991, Gibson served for 11 years at AT&T Bell Laboratories at Murray Hill, N.J., as a distinguished member of the technical staff and head of the Electronics and Photonics Materials Research Department.

Gopal Shenoy has been interim associate laboratory director for the APS.

"Under Gopal's leadership, the APS has continued to flourish and to build for the future," Grunder said. "I am sure that Gopal's many outstanding contributions to building and serving the APS user community will continue well into the future."

Gohoure to direct Argonne's diversity program

Eve Gohoure has been named the laboratory's new diversity program officer, and will oversee Argonne's equal employment practices.

"The position really does combine many of my interests into one package -- working in diversity, affirmative action and equal employment opportunity programs in a creative and international atmosphere," said Gohoure. She will also conduct training and assist in the development of targeted recruiting strategies.

Formerly, Gohoure worked as an Equal Opportunity Specialist/Senior Compliance Officer with the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs in Detroit. There she audited the affirmative action and equal employment opportunity programs of federal contractors and investigated potential employment discrimination.

She has also served in the U.S. Peace Corps in Cote d'Ivoire (West Africa) as a Director of Vocational Training for individuals with disabilities and as a Community Development Specialist, focusing on urban environmental management.
