Hanging the red-ribbon in front of doors in urban slum's homes: Increasing the awareness on HIV/AIDS rapidly.

Khadka A, Bhatta SR; International Conference on AIDS (15th : 2004 : Bangkok, Thailand).

Int Conf AIDS. 2004 Jul 11-16; 15: abstract no. C10598.

General Welfare Pratisthan, Narayangarh, Nepal

Issues: Poor and inadequate knowledge and lack of appropriate information on HIV/AIDS among the Housewives, youths and adolescents in urban-slum areas has been found leading them to be vulnerable by HIV Infections unknowingly and gradually. Description: Genwral Welfare Pratisthan and Diyalo Pariwar as the part of Rural-Urban Participatory Programme made a "Community Intervention on HIV/AIDS and STIs among Slum People" during January to December 2003. In that Intervention, a series of House-to-House visits with sticking the Red Ribbons was carried out and HIV preventing messages were delivered to every household maintaining the social norms and practices on their existing sexual behaviors. More than 150 Red Ribbons were hanged over the doors of all targeted homes.15 Peer Communicators are being currently performing for their own communities on HIV/AIDS prevention by making regular home visits and group visits. 15 couples are found treated their STI cases after Intervention. Most of the youths and adolescents are found basically known about preventing measures of HIV/AIDS/STIs. Lessons Learned: Housewives living in Slum Areas are vulnerable by their inadequate knowledge and attitudes towards sexual behaviors and by their men's sexual habit of making multiple sex partners. In this situation, targeted one-to-one educational contacts made them fully aware from the HIV/AIDS and STIs. Similarly the cases of HIV Infections and PLWHA are coming in front of the societies after the supportive behaviors by the program implementers. Recommendation: Outreach schedule can be established among the slum areas mobilizing Housewives after providing them appropriate training on "How to Communicate on HIV/AIDS to Housewives and their Sexually Mobile Men" with program guidelines.
