Solaris Freeware Anonymous FTP or Mirror Sites

These sites mirror either the www.sunfreeware.com web site, the ftp.sunfreeware.com ftp server, or both. For those of you behind firewalls that don't permit ftp downloads, some of the sites permits http downloads. When possible, please use the server closest to you. When you click on a mirror site link you might want to make sure that it is up-to-date since you will be looking at their web site and not the main sunfreeware.com site. Some mirror sites mirror daily and others once a month or less. Try various mirror sites to see which one works best for you. If you feel a mirror site is not working or has become out-of-date, please try to contact the site administrator directly and inform me also at steve@smc.vnet.net.

If you want to go directly to the sunfreeware.com ftp site - especially if you want to find older packages no longer on the main sunfreeware.com web page - you can click on

ftp://ftp.sunfreeware.com/pub/freeware

or now via http:

http://ftp.sunfreeware.com/ftp/pub/freeware

and move into the subdirectories to obtain new and older files.

If you want to become a mirror site, see the requirements below.

Some users have trouble downloading very large files via a browser. Such users should try using command line anonymous ftp or perhaps the Sun Download Manager.

Mirroring Rules

If you want your organization to be a mirror site for sunfreeware.com and listed on this page, please contact me at steve@smc.vnet.net after you have considered the following rules.

  1. Check the list above and see if your country is already on the list. I do not want too many mirror sites in each country. If you feel you can offer better or faster service that the site already on this list, let me know that.
  2. Mirror from the ftp.sunfreeware.com site. Use the files in the forsunsites directory to create your web pages mirror, but do not put them in your ftp mirroring directory. Note that you will have to edit the html pages to point to your local ftp site directories rather than the ftp.sunfreeware.com ones contained in the html files you download from my server.
  3. If you can mirror with anonymous rsync or similar program so that only new or changed files are downloaded, that will also save on my server's time. If you can download on an off-peak time - say in the middle of the night USA Eastern time - it will also help. A mirror once a day or two is usually sufficient.
  4. Please keep web site hits and ftp download statistics in as much detail as possible and then send them to me monthly. There are several reasons for this. First, is so that I can know what programs are being downloaded so that I can plan to add these programs to my lists for other releases of Solaris. Also, my funding sources often need to know of the success of this effort. The more data I can provide, the better.
  5. Let me know when you have the mirroring up and running so I can put them on my web site. Send me the details of the location addresses. Also send me a contact name and email address at your site. If this contact person changes, let me know that.
  6. Make sure that people understand that you are a mirror site and have them report downloading and other problems related to your site to you first.
  7. Test your site periodically to make sure it is running properly and compare it to my site to see that the mirroring is working.
  8. Do not use the mirroring of sunfreeware.com to sell products or sell products using the packages on sunfreeware.com.

Make sure you still read the Disclaimer and Download and Installation Instructions and FAQ.
