Female-to-male transgenders and HIV risk behaviors in Los Angeles, California.

Gross J, Davis M; International Conference on AIDS (15th : 2004 : Bangkok, Thailand).

Int Conf AIDS. 2004 Jul 11-16; 15: abstract no. C10577.

FTM Alliance of Los Angeles, Los Angeles, United States

Issues: Most HIV prevention efforts among the transgender population focuses on the male-to-female (MTF) transgender population. Because of a lack of research and data, the female-to-male (FTM) transgender population has been ignored by the HIV prevention community. Description: FTM Alliance of Los Angeles, with the help of several transgender organizations, designed, implemented, and analyzed a survey to access the risk of the transgender population (both MTF and FTM) in Los Angeles County. The survey investigates sexual risk behaviors and drug behaviors of the MTF and FTM community and the results are analyzed by comparing the two means (t-test). Lessons learned: Surveys were completed by 35 male-to-female transgenders and 30 female-to-male transgenders. Preliminary results indicate similar risk behaviors across the two communities. Both communities show unprotected sexual activity with multiple partners and high amounts of drug and alcohol use. In particular, high rates of sex under the influence exist in both communities. However, the MTF community reports higher levels of condom use and a higher level of awareness regarding risk levels when compared to the FTM community. Recommendations: National and international research efforts should further investigate the true needs of FTM communities. Then, research and funding for HIV prevention and health promotion efforts need to take into account the diverse needs of the entire transgender community - both FTM and MTF.
