Accelerator Update for February 20, 2009 - February 23, 2009

 

The Integrated Luminosity for 2/16/09 to 2/23/09 was 65.24 Pb -1.

Friday Feb 20

The day shift began with Tevatron (TeV) experts conducting studies, with Operations monitoring the Recycler stash (264.6E10) and the Antiproton Source stack (39.7E10), with the Linac, Booster, and Main Injector (MI) operating normally, with the MiniBooNE and NuMI experiments taking beam, and with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) and D-Zero (D0) waiting for the next store.

Cryo system technicians reported at 8:17 AM that they had replaced a wet engine nitrogen bottle at TeV sectors A1 and A3.

Operations reported at 8:36 AM that they had prepared the TeV for electrical safety system testing and for an access.

Interlock experts began work on the safety system for TeV F sector at 9:23 AM.

A Pbar expert began a cooling study at 9:43 AM.

Operators loaded an energy conservation time line into the Time Line Generator at 9:45 AM.

Interlock experts completed their F sector work at 10:04 AM.

Operations prepared D0 and CDF for access by 10:06 AM.

CDF came out of access at 10:35 AM.

D0 came out of access at 11:04 AM.

Operations resumed sending beam to MiniBooNE at 11:15 AM.

Operations resumed sending beam to NuMI at 11:42 AM.

Pbar resumed stacking at 11:47 AM.

Operations established beam to the Meson MTest experiment around noon.

Operations put the TeV through a dry squeeze at 1:15 PM.

Operations put the TeV through a wet squeeze at 1:20 PM.

Operations prepared Pbar for a 15 minutes access at 2:14 PM.

Pbar resumed stacking at 2:47 PM.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 2:49 PM.

Operations reported at 4 PM that the Recycler had stashed antiprotons four times during the day shift.

Operations established store 6819 at 4:12 PM with an initial luminosity of 309.0E30.

Operations disabled the MTest beam at 6:03 PM. This concluded the MTest T971 experiment for now. They will be back in April, 2009.

Operations reported at 11:59 PM that the Recycler had stashed eight times during the evening shift.

Saturday Feb 21

The midnight shift began with Operations monitoring store 6819 (116.85E30) and the stash (178.2E10), with Pbar stacking (23.9E10), and with NuMI and MiniBooNE taking beam.

At 12:19 AM, an Accumulator kicker (A:IKIK) tripped off and would not reset. Operators investigated and found the Spellman power supply “A” off and would not reset. Operations called in experts.

Operators reported at 12:55 AM, before the power supply experts had arrived, that they found the fan cover had come loose and blocked the fan blades. Operators adjusted the cover, the fans started spinning, and the power supply reset.

At 1:04 AM, A:IKIK tripped off again. The power supply experts investigated.

The Pbar power supply experts brought A:IKIK back online. Pbar resumed stacking at 2:15 AM.

At 2:26 AM, Operations reported that the Accumulator transverse cooling TWTs (vertical bands 1 & 2) were tripping off. It took multiple resets and attenuator adjustments to get them back on.

At 4:53 AM, the P1 transfer line beam permit tripped off when a power supply’s current (I:V714) drifted low. Everything reset.

At 6:05 AM, Accumulator TWTs (CV1TWT and CV2TWT) began tripping off again. Operators called in experts. Later, an expert reported that he found and fixed a problem with the computer interface.

Operations terminated store 6819 at 7:33 AM.

Operations prepared CDF for an access at 7:52 AM.

Operations reported at 7:59 AM that the Recycler had stashed five times during the midnight shift.

At 9:12 AM, Operations reported that during two transfers of antiprotons to the Recycler the MI closure program did not appear to be sending any changes out.

CDF came out of access at 9:17 AM.

At 9:55 AM, a Linac RF station (LRF5) tripped off for the first of three times in eight minutes. It reset.

Operations put the TeV through a dry squeeze at 10 AM.

Operations put the TeV through a wet squeeze and sent out orbit corrections at 11:04 AM.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 11:25 AM.

Operations established store 6823 at 1 PM with an initial luminosity of 313.04E30.

At 2:21 PM, LRF3 tripped off. It reset.

At 3:19 PM, the Pbar beam permit tripped off during tuning, which also caused the NuMI beam permit to trip. Everything reset.

At 4:37 PM, LRF3 tripped off. It reset.

Operations reported at 7:54 PM that the Recycler had stashed 11 times during the last 12 hours.

At 10:08 PM, operators adjusted the MI closure program.

Sunday Feb 22

The midnight shift began with Operations monitoring store 6823 and the stash, with Pbar stacking, and with NuMI and MiniBooNE taking beam.

At 2:08 AM, Operations reported a slight drop in the output of the I- Source that corresponded with a rise in the cathode temperature. Operators adjusted the extractor and magnet.

At 2:26 AM, BRF16 tripped off and would not reset. Operations reduced the intensity of the Booster beam while operators investigated.

At 4:14 AM, Operations reported that BRF16 would not stay on. Operators bypassed the station and brought BRF14 on in its place.

Operations terminated store 6823 at 4:18 AM.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 4:30 AM.

Operations established store 6824 at 5:44 AM with an initial luminosity of 306.9E30.

At 6:06 AM, operators readjusted the MI closure program.

At 7:02 AM, the P1 transfer line beam permit tripped off due to V714. Everything reset.

Operations reported at 8:03 AM that the Recycler had stashed 10 times during the last 12 hours.

At 8:38 AM, BRF13 tripped off. It reset.

At 8:44 AM, the NuMI beam permit tripped off. It reset.

At 9:47 AM, BRF13 and 14 tripped off when a vacuum pump (IPRF23) tripped off. Everything reset.

At 9:56 AM, BRF19 tripped off. It reset.

At 2:37 PM, the P1 transfer line beam permit tripped off due to V714. Everything reset.

At 3:37 PM, the Pelletron tripped off for the first of two times in about an hour. Operations contacted an expert and he suggested it be given a rest before resetting it.

At 4:51 PM, BRF3, 4, 9, and 15 tripped off for the first of two times in about 90 minutes. It reset.

At 7:38 PM, the NuMI beam permit tripped off due to E:V108. Everything reset.

Operations reported at 7:56 PM that the Recycler had stashed 12 times during the last 12 hours.

At 8:58 PM, a Booster vacuum pump (IPRF22) tripped off and tripped off BRF11 and 12. Everything reset.

At 9 PM, BRF11 tripped off. It reset.

At 9:26 PM, BRF14 tripped off for the first of two times. It reset.

Operations terminated store 6824 at 10:04 PM.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 10:15 PM.

At 10:48 PM, LRF1 tripped off. Operators investigated and reported hearing sparking. Operations called in an expert.

Operations put Pbar into standby and loaded an energy conservation time line at 11:28 PM.

Operations established store 6825 at 11:41 PM with an initial luminosity of 314.2E30.

Monday Feb 23

The midnight shift began with Operations monitoring store 6825 and the stash, with Pbar stacking, and with NuMI and MiniBooNE taking beam.

At 12:03 AM, a TeV sector A3 vacuum pump (T:A3RP3) tripped off. Operators will monitor the vacuum in that area.

At 5:09 AM, BRF19 tripped off. It reset.

At 6:32 AM, BRF4 tripped off for the first of two times in two minutes. It reset.

Operations reported at 7:54 AM that the Recycler had stashed 9 times during the last 12 hours.

The Plans for Monday

The plans for today are to stack, stash, and store. The Run Coordinator will allow vacuum experts to access TeV sector A3 to check the vacuum. D0 and CDF will also be allowed to access.
