LBNL RUNAROUND COMMITTEE INSTRUCTIONS:
TIMEKEEPERS

Four weeks before the runaround:
Arrange to borrow two powerbooks for one week.

One week before the runaround:
1 Pick up powerbooks
2 Get runaround timer program from course coordinator
3 Put the runaround timer folder on the powerbook hard disk
4 Exercise program to become familiar with its features

The night before the runaround
1 Pull down the "Apple" menu on the far left and activate Control Panels. Double click on the "Keyboard" file and turn off the key repeat
2 Pull down the "Apple" menu on the far left and activate Control Panels. Double click on the "Portable" file and set both the automatic sleep and hard disk to 15 min
3 Charge the batteries all night

At 11 am at the finishing area
1 Place the computer on a table so that the operator can sight across the finish line.
2 Exercise the program and check that time and comments data are properly written to disk file
3 Keep them plugged in to "top off" the batteries

At 11:45 at the starting line
1 Get your stop watch ready
2 At the exact instant that the runners take off (be alert for premature starts) start your stopwatch
3 Walk briskly to the finish area

At the finish line- Computers:
1 Pull down the Control menu and activate "Prepare to start"
2 At the next exact minute on your stopwatch , click in the "START" button or press the return key.
3 Click anywhere in the window and enter your name
4 When each runner crosses the finish line, press the return key once
5 If you know the name of a runner who just finished and you have a 10-20 sec gap after that runner, click anywhere in the window and enter the runner's name in the dialog box. Press the "return" key or click in the "OK" button to make the dialog box disappear.
6 Keep timing runners until 12:45. Do not believe anyone who claims to be the "last runner". There may be a slower walker behind them.
7 At 12:45, pull down the "File" menu and activate "Quit"
8 Double click on the "runaround.dat" file to see the results ("simple text" should automatically launch)

At the finish line- Bullhorn:
One timer uses his stopwatch and the bullhorn to call out times as runners cross the finish line.

AFTER THE RUN
:
1 Change name of "rundarounddat" file so something that contains your name and the year
2 Give disks containing the ".dat" files to course coordinator.
3 Return bullhorn

Again, keep timing runners until 12:45- some 1st place group finishers (for example, Women over 69) may be the last to finish!!!
