Galaxy Types

This activity uses five images of galaxies that you can image process using HOU-IP and then classify according to the galaxy types described in the HOU Galaxy Workshop.

You will be using the images:

m87.fth, n5907.fth, m101.fth, m32.fth, n4565.fth

If these images are not already on your computer download them here.

Instructions:
For each image use HOU-IP to create a picture of the galaxy that you prefer:

Open the image using the Open command under the File menu.
Change the color palette by selecting from the palette box on the display control bar (default is grey).
Adjust the Min and Max by sliding the red and blue buttons on the display control bar.
Try log scaling by clicking in the Log box on the display control bar.

Choose the galaxy type for each image from the lists below:

M87.fth

N5907.fth

M101.fth

M32.fth

N4565.fth
