Summary
The Fire Product: Burned Area Maps of Portugal was part of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme Data and Information System (IGBP-DIS) Regional Satellite Fire Data Compilation CD-ROM. The burned area maps of Portugal, for the years 1991-94 were obtained from supervised classification of Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper imagery. The work was ... performed using raw digital counts, i.e. without radiometric calibration. The images were georeferenced to an accuracy of less than one pixel root mean square error. All fire scars with an area >= 15ha were mapped. Initial fire scar mapping for the years 1991 and 1992 was not done at the Remote Sensing and Geographical Analysis Laboratory of DEF/ISA, but contracted out by the Direccao Geral das Florestas (DGF, the Portuguese Forest Service) to a private company. These data were subsequently reanalysed by DEF/ISA, to ensure methodological consistency with the 1993 and 1994 work. The datasets consists of five vector files in DXF format (ASCII Drawing Interchange Files) : - Four files giving the fire perimeters for the years 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1994. - One file containing the coastline and border with Spain. DXF is a widely supported vector format and is rich in features (support for 3D objects, curves, text, associative dimensioning). DXF files are standard ASCII text files. They can be read by many applications.
