TOTAL WHOLESALE TRADE
Wholesale trade, SIC Major Groups 50 and 51 in the 1987 SIC manual, includes
establishments primarily engaged in selling merchandise to retailers; to
industrial, commercial, institutional, farm, or professional business users;
or to other wholesalers; or acting as agents or brokers in buying merchandise
for or selling merchandise to such persons or companies.
In addition to being classified by SIC groups, each wholesale establishment
was classified for the census by type of operation according to the ownership
of the business, ownership of the goods sold, or character of the principal
transactions. See OPTYPE for these type of operation groupings.
DURABLE GOODS (SIC MAJOR GROUP 50)
This major group includes establishments primarily engaged in the
wholesale distribution of motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts and
supplies (SIC Industry Group 501); furniture and homefurnishings (SIC
Industry Group 502); lumber and other construction materials (SIC Industry
Group 503); professional and commercial equipment and supplies (SIC Industry
Group 504); metals and minerals, except petroleum (SIC Industry Group 505);
electrical goods (SIC Industry Group 506); hardware, and plumbing and heating
equipment and supplies (SIC Industry Group 507); machinery, equipment, and
supplies (SIC Industry Group 508); and miscellaneous durable goods (SIC
Industry Group 509).
MOTOR VEHICLES AND MOTOR VEHICLE PARTS AND SUPPLIES (SIC INDUSTRY GROUP 501)
This industry group includes establishments primarily engaged in the
wholesale distribution of automobiles and other motor vehicles (SIC 5012);
motor vehicle supplies and new parts (SIC 5013); tires and tubes (SIC 5014);
and used motor vehicle parts (SIC 5015).
AUTOMOBILES AND OTHER MOTOR VEHICLES (SIC 5012)
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of new and
used passenger automobiles, trucks, trailers, and other motor vehicles,
including motorcycles, motor homes, and snowmobiles. Establishments
primarily engaged in selling at retail to individual customers for personal
use, and also selling a limited amount of new and used passenger automobiles
and trucks at wholesale, are classified in Retail Trade, Industry 5511.
SIC 5012 is subdivided in some tables into -
1. Automobile, light trucks, motorcycles, buses and recreational

AUTOMOBILES AND MOTORCYCLES
Establishments primarily engaged in selling new and used passenger vehicles

engaged in the wholesale distribution of minibikes are classified in Industry
5091. Establishments primarily engaged in selling at retail to individual
customers for personal use, and also selling a limited amount of new and used
passenger automobiles and motorcycles at wholesale, are classified in Retail
Trade, Industry 5511.
BUSSES AND RECREATIONAL VEHICLES
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of busses and
recreational vehicles. Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale
distribution of mobile homes are classified in Industry 5039. Establishments
primarily engaged in selling at retail to individual customers for personal
use, and also selling a limited amount of new and used busses and
recreational vehicles at wholesale, are classified in Retail Trade,
Industry 5511.
LIGHT TRUCKS AND VANS (14,000 lb or less)
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of new and
used light trucks and cargo vans under 14,000 lb. gross wt. Establishments
primarily engaged in selling at retail to individual customers for personal
use, and also selling a limited amount of new and used light trucks and vans
at wholesale, are classified in Retail Trade, Industry 5511.
MEDIUM AND HEAVY TRUCKS AND TRACTORS (OVER 14,000 LB)
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of new and
used medium and heavy trucks and tractors over 14,000 lb. gross wt. Medium
and heavy trucks and tractors (over 14,000 lb) are subdivided in some tables
into -

parts. Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of
automotive air-conditioners are classified in Industry 5075. Establishments
primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of motor vehicle radios,
cassette players, CD players, amps, speakers, and other audio equipment are
classified in Industry 5064.
SIC 5013 is subdivided in some tables into -

MOTOR VEHICLE SUPPLIES AND NEW PARTS - WAREHOUSE DISTRIBUTORS

vehicle supplies and new parts mostly to businesses other than retail and
service. Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of
automotive air-conditioners are classified in Industry 5075. Establishments
primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of motor vehicle radios,
cassette players, CD players, amps, speakers, and other audio equipment are
classified in Industry 5064.
MOTOR VEHICLE SUPPLIES AND NEW PARTS - JOBBERS
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of motor
vehicle supplies and new parts mostly to retail and service businesses.
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of automotive
air-conditioners are classified in Industry 5075. Establishments primarily
engaged in the wholesale distribution of motor vehicle radios, cassette
players, CD players, amps, speakers, and other audio equipment are classified
in Industry 5064.
PETROLEUM PRODUCTS MARKETING EQUIPMENT
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of petroleum
products marketing equipment.
TIRES AND TUBES (SIC 5014)
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of tires and
tubes for passenger and commercial vehicles. Establishments primarily
engaged in the wholesale distribution of bicycle tires and tubes are
classified in Industry 5091.
MOTOR VEHICLE PARTS, USED (SIC 5015)
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution at wholesale
or retail of used motor vehicle parts. This industry includes establishments
primarily engaged in dismantling motor vehicles for the purpose of selling
parts. Establishments primarily engaged in dismantling motor vehicles for
scrap are classified in Industry 5093. Establishments primarily engaged in
the sales of used automobiles, boats, and trailers are classified in Retail
Trade, Major Group 55. Establishments primarily engaged in sales of used
mobile homes are classified in Retail Trade, Industry 5271. Establishments
primarily engaged in automobile repair are classified in Services, Industry
Group 753.
FURNITURE AND HOMEFURNISHINGS (SIC INDUSTRY GROUP 502)
This industry group includes establishments primarily engaged in the
wholesale distribution of furniture (SIC 5021) and homefurnishings (SIC
5023).
FURNITURE (SIC 5021)
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of furniture,
including bed springs, mattresses, and other household furniture; office
furniture; and furniture for public parks and buildings. Establishments
primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of partitions, shelving,
lockers, and store fixtures are classified in Industry 5046.
SIC 5021 is subdivided in some tables into -
1. Household and lawn furniture.
2. Office and business furniture.
HOUSEHOLD AND LAWN FURNITURE
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of household
and lawn furniture, including bed springs, mattresses, and other household
furniture.
OFFICE AND BUSINESS FURNITURE
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of filing
cabinets (wood or steel), office furniture, store furniture, and public
furniture for parks and buildings. Establishments primarily engaged in the
wholesale distribution of partitions, shelving, lockers, and store fixtures
are classified in Industry 5046. Establishments primarily engaged in the
wholesale distribution of drafting tables are classified in Industry 5049.
HOMEFURNISHINGS (SIC 5023)
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of
homefurnishings and housewares, including antiques; china; glassware and
earthenware; lamps (including electric); curtains and draperies; linens and
towels; and carpets, linoleum, and all other types of hard and soft surface
floor coverings. Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale
distribution of other electrical household goods are classified in Industry
5064, and those distributing precious metal flatware are classified in
Industry 5094.
SIC 5023 is subdivided in some tables into -
1. Household china, glassware, and crockery.
2. Linens, domestics, draperies, and curtains.
3. Floor coverings.
4. Other homefurnishings.
HOUSEHOLD CHINA, GLASSWARE, AND CROCKERY
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of household
china, glassware, and crockery, including antiques; china; glassware and
earthenware; and lamps (including electric). Establishments primarily
engaged in the wholesale distribution of other electrical household goods are
classified in Industry 5064, and those distributing precious metal flatware
are classified in Industry 5094.
LINENS, DOMESTICS, DRAPERIES, AND CURTAINS
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of bedspreads,
blankets, pillowcases, bead sheets, table linens, bathroom linens (towels,
bathmats, etc.), curtains, shades, and other domestics.
FLOOR COVERINGS
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of floor
coverings, including carpets, linoleum, rugs, and all other types of hard and
soft surface floor coverings. Establishments primarily engaged in the
wholesale distribution of ceramic and clay tile are classified in Industry
5032.
OTHER HOMEFURNISHINGS
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of
aluminumware, lamps, glass mirrors, kitchen tools and utensils and other
general home furnishings and homewares, including antiques. Establishments
primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of other electrical household
goods are classified in Industry 5064, and those distributing precious metal
flatware are classified in Industry 5094.
LUMBER AND OTHER CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS (SIC INDUSTRY GROUP 503)
This industry group includes establishments primarily engaged in the
wholesale distribution of lumber, plywood, millwork and wood panels (SIC
5031); brick, stone, and related construction materials (SIC 5032); roofing,
siding, and insulation materials (SIC 5033); and construction materials, not
elsewhere classified (SIC 5039).
LUMBER, PLYWOOD, MILLWORK AND WOOD PANELS (SIC 5031)
Establishments, with or without yards, primarily engaged in the wholesale
distribution of rough, dressed, and finished lumber (but not timber);
plywood; reconstituted wood fiber products; doors and windows and their
frames (all materials); wood fencing; and other wood or metal millwork.
SIC 5031 is subdivided in some tables into -
1. Lumber - without yard.
2. Lumber - with yard.
3. Plywood, millwork, and wood panels.
LUMBER - WITHOUT YARD
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of rough,
dressed, and finished lumber. These establishments order the goods that are
shipped direct from the supplier to the customers, thus eliminating
intermediate warehousing. Establishments selling lumber to the general
public and known as "retail" in the trade are classified in Retail Trade,
Industry 5211.
LUMBER - WITH YARD
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of rough,
dressed, and finished lumber. These establishments perform warehousing and
storage functions and usually make deliveries. Establishments selling lumber
to the general public and known as "retail" in the trade are classified in
Retail Trade, Industry 5211.
PLYWOOD, MILLWORK, AND WOOD PANELS
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of plywood
(hardwood, softwood, and nonwood face); reconstituted wood fiber products;
doors and windows and their frames (all materials); overhead doors; veneer;
wood fencing; and other wood or metal millwork. Establishments selling
plywood and millwork to the general public and known as "retail" in the trade
are classified in Retail Trade, Industry 5211.
BRICK, STONE, AND RELATED CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS (SIC 5032)
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of stone,
cement, lime construction sand, and gravel; brick (except refractory);
asphalt and concrete mixtures; and concrete, stone, and structural clay
products (other than refractories). Distributors of industrial sand and of
refractory materials are classified in Industry 5085. Establishments
primarily engaged in producing ready-mixed concrete are classified in
Manufacturing, Industry 3273.
SIC 5032 is subdivided in some tables into -
1. Brick, block, tile, clay/cement sewer pipe.
2. Sand, gravel, and stone.
3. Cement, lime, and related products.
BRICK, BLOCK, TILE, CLAY/CEMENT SEWER PIPE
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of bricks
(except refractory), blocks, and clay construction materials (other than
refractories). Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale
distribution of industrial sand and refractory materials are classified in
Industry 5085. Establishments primarily engaged in producing ready-mix
concrete are classified in Manufacturing, Industry 3273.
SAND, GRAVEL, AND STONE
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of sand,
gravel, and stone. Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale
distribution of industrial sand are classified in Industry 5085.
Establishments primarily engaged in producing ready-mix concrete are
classified in Manufacturing, Industry 3273.
CEMENT, LIME, AND RELATED PRODUCTS
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of cement,
lime, asphalt, and related products. Establishments primarily engaged in
producing ready-mix concrete are classified in Manufacturing, Industry 3273.
ROOFING, SIDING, AND INSULATION MATERIALS (SIC 5033)
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of roofing,
siding (except wood), and insulation materials.
CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS, NOT ELSEWHERE CLASSIFIED (SIC 5039)
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of mobile
homes and of construction materials, not elsewhere classified, including
prefabricated buildings and glass. Establishments selling construction
materials to the general public and known as retail in the trade are
classified in Retail Trade, Industry 5211. Establishments primarily engaged
in marketing heavy structural metal products are classified in Industry 5051.
SIC 5039 is subdivided in some tables into -
1. Flat glass and other construction glass.
2. Other construction materials.
FLAT GLASS AND OTHER CONSTRUCTION GLASS
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of flat glass,
glass blocks, plate glass, window glass, building glass, and other
construction glass.
OTHER CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of building
and construction paper; plastic building materials; prefabricated structural
assemblies (including mobile homes); and other building materials.
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of heavy
structural metal products are classified in Industry 5051.
PROFESSIONAL AND COMMERCIAL EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES (SIC INDUSTRY GROUP 504)
This industry group includes establishments primarily engaged in the
wholesale distribution of photographic equipment and supplies (SIC 5043);
office equipment (SIC 5044); computers and computer peripheral equipment and
software (SIC 5045); commercial equipment, not elsewhere classified (SIC
5046); medical, dental, and hospital equipment and supplies (SIC 5047);
ophthalmic goods (SIC 5048); and professional equipment and supplies, not
elsewhere classified (SIC 5049).
PHOTOGRAPHIC EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES (SIC 5043)
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of
photographic equipment and supplies. Establishments primarily engaged in the
wholesale distribution of photocopy, microfilm, and similar equipment are
classified in Industry 5044.
OFFICE EQUIPMENT (SIC 5044)
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of office
machines and related equipment, including photocopy and microfilm equipment,
and safes and vaults. These establishments frequently also sell office
supplies. However, establishments primarily engaged in wholesaling most
office supplies are classified on Industry Group 511. Establishments
primarily engaged in wholesaling office furniture are classified in Industry
5021; and those wholesaling computers and peripheral equipment are classified
in Industry 5045.
COMPUTERS AND COMPUTER PERIPHERAL EQUIPMENT AND SOFTWARE (SIC 5045)
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of computers,
computer peripheral equipment, and computer software. These establishments
frequently may sell related supplies, but establishments primarily engaged in
wholesaling supplies are classified according to the individual product (for
example, computer paper in Industry 5112). Establishments primarily engaged
in the wholesale distribution of modems and other electronic communications
equipment are classified in Industry 5065. Establishments primarily engaged
in selling computers and computer peripheral equipment and software for other
than business or professional use are classified in Retail Trade, Industry
5734.
SIC 5045 is subdivided in some tables into -
1. Computers and peripheral equipment (selling primarily to business
customers).

COMPUTERS AND PERIPHERAL EQUIPMENT SOLD FOR RESALE
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of new and
used computer hardware and peripheral equipment to business customers for the
purpose of resale.
COMPUTERS AND PERIPHERAL EQUIPMENT SOLD FOR END USE
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of new and
used computer hardware and peripheral equipment to business customers for end
use.
COMPUTER SOFTWARE (PREPACKAGED, OFF-THE-SHELF)
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of prepackaged
computer software off the shelf. Establishments primarily engaged in custom
computer programming/software services are classified in Services, Industry
7371. Establishments primarily engaged in selling customized prepackaged
software are classified in Services, Industry 7372. Computer systems
integrators who "develop" or "modify" software with computer and/or
noncomputer equipment are classified in Services, Industry 7373.
COMMERCIAL EQUIPMENT, NOT ELSEWHERE CLASSIFIED (SIC 5046)
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of commercial
and related machines and equipment, not elsewhere classified, such as
commercial cooking and food service equipment; partitions, shelving, lockers,
and store fixtures; electrical signs; and balances and scales, except
laboratory.
SIC 5046 is subdivided in some tables into -
1. Restaurant and hotel equipment and supplies.
2. Store machines and equipment.
RESTAURANT AND HOTEL EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of restaurant
and hotel equipment and supplies, such as commercial coffee urns and cooking
equipment. Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of
hotel and restaurant furniture are classified in Industry 5021.
STORE MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of store
equipment (except furniture), machines, and fixtures. Establishments
primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of store furniture are
classified in Industry 5021.
MEDICAL, DENTAL, AND HOSPITAL EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES (SIC 5047)
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of surgical
and other medical instruments, apparatus, and equipment; dentist equipment;
artificial limbs; operating room and hospital equipment; X-ray machines; and
other electromedical equipment and apparatus used by physicians and in
hospitals. Also included in this industry are establishments primarily
engaged in the wholesale distribution of professional supplies used by
medical and dental practitioners.
SIC 5047 is subdivided in some tables into -
1. Medical and hospital equipment.
2. Dental equipment and supplies.
MEDICAL AND HOSPITAL EQUIPMENT
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of surgical
and medical instruments, apparatus, and equipment; orthopedic appliances;
artificial limbs; operating room and other hospital equipment; medical x-ray
machines and parts; and other scientific instruments used by physicians and
in hospitals. Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution
of oxygen are classified in Industry 5169. Establishments primarily engaged
in the wholesale distribution of veterinarians' equipment and supplies are
classified in Industry 5049.
DENTAL EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of equipment
and supplies used by dentists such as dental drills, teeth, dental gold,
dental chairs, sterilizers, dental x-ray machines and parts, cabinets, dental
engines, etc.
OPHTHALMIC GOODS (SIC 5048)
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of
professional equipment and goods used, prescribed, or sold by
ophthalmologists, optometrists, and opticians, including ophthalmic frames,
lenses, and sunglass lenses.
PROFESSIONAL EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES, NOT ELSEWHERE CLASSIFIED (SIC 5049)
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of
professional equipment and supplies, not elsewhere classified, such as
drafting instruments, laboratory equipment, and scientific instruments.
SIC 5049 is subdivided in some tables into -
1. Religious and school supplies.
2. Other professional equipment and supplies, not elsewhere
classified. Establishments primarily engaged in selling specialty
lines of professional equipment and supplies not mentioned above,
such as veterinarian equipment and supplies, drafting supplies, and
scientific equipment.
RELIGIOUS AND SCHOOL SUPPLIES
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of church
goods and religious articles such as statuary, vestments, fonts, candles,
religious pictures, calendars, literature, and religious articles made from
precious and semiprecious materials; and school equipment and supplies such
as black boards, chalk, rulers, globes, and wall maps. Establishments
primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of school desks are
classified in Industry 5021.
OTHER PROFESSIONAL EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES, NOT ELSEWHERE CLASSIFIED
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of drafting
instruments, veterinarians' equipment and supplies, professional equipment
and supplies (not ordinarily used in hospitals), scientific instruments and
supplies, and laboratory equipment.
METALS AND MINERALS, EXCEPT PETROLEUM (SIC INDUSTRY GROUP 505)
This industry group includes metals service centers and offices (SIC 5051)
and establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of coal
and other minerals and ores (SIC 5052).
METALS SERVICE CENTERS AND OFFICES (SIC 5051)
Establishments primarily engaged in marketing semifinished metal products,
except precious metals. Establishments in this industry may operate with
warehouses (metals service centers) or without warehouses (metal sales
offices). Establishments primarily engaged in marketing precious metals are
classified in Industry 5092.
SIC 5051 is subdivided in some tables into -
1. Ferrous metals service centers and offices.

metals are classified in Industry 5092. Establishments primarily engaged in
the wholesale distribution of staples, tacks, and brads are classified in
Industry 5072. Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale

Ferrous metals service centers and offices are subdivided in some tables

Establishments primarily engaged in marketing semifinished ferrous metal
products, except precious metals, and maintain inventories. Establishments

liquid storage capacity of 10,000 gallons or more. Included are packaged and
bottled petroleum products distributors, truck jobbers, and others marketing
petroleum and its products at wholesale.
BEER, WINE, AND DISTILLED ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES (SIC INDUSTRY GROUP 518)
This industry group includes establishments primarily engaged in the
wholesale distribution of beer and ale (SIC 5181); and wine and distilled
alcoholic beverages (SIC 5182).
BEER AND ALE (SIC 5181)
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of beer, ale,
porter, and other fermented malt beverages.
WINE AND DISTILLED ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES (SIC 5182)
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of distilled
spirits, including neutral spirits and ethyl alcohol used in blended wines
and distilled liquors.
SIC 5182 is subdivided in some tables into -

Establishments owned by the state and primarily engaged in the wholesale

MISCELLANEOUS NONDURABLE GOODS (SIC INDUSTRY GROUP 519)
This industry group includes establishments primarily engaged in the
wholesale distribution of farm supplies (SIC 5191); books, periodicals, and
newspapers (SIC 5192); flowers, nursery stock, and florists' supplies (SIC
5193); tobacco and tobacco products (SIC 5194); paints, varnishes, and
supplies (SIC 5198); and nondurable goods, not elsewhere classified (SIC
5199).
FARM SUPPLIES (SIC 5191)
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of animal
feeds, fertilizers, agricultural chemicals, pesticides, seeds, and other farm
supplies, except grains. Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale
distribution of pet food are classified in Industry 5149, and those
distributing pet supplies are classified in Industry 5199.
SIC 5191 is subdivided in some tables into -
1. Farm supplies - farm dealers.
2. Farm supplies - wholesale distributors.

Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of animal
feeds, fertilizers, agricultural chemicals, pesticides, seeds, and other farm
supplies, except grains. These establishments are selling directly to
farmers for farm use. Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale
distribution of pet food are classified in Industry 5149, and those
distributing pet supplies are classified in Industry 5199.
FARM SUPPLIES - WHOLESALE DISTRIBUTORS
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of animal
feeds, fertilizers, agricultural chemicals, pesticides, seeds, and other farm
supplies, except grains. These establishments are marketing directly to
institutions (nonfarm), governments, farm dealers, for export, etc., not
primarily to farm accounts for farm use. Establishments primarily engaged in
the wholesale distribution of pet food are classified in Industry 5149, and
those distributing pet supplies are classified in Industry 5199.
BOOKS, PERIODICALS, AND NEWSPAPERS (SIC 5192)
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of books,
periodicals, and newspapers.
FLOWERS, NURSERY STOCK, AND FLORISTS' SUPPLIES (SIC 5193)
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of flowers,
nursery stock, and florists' supplies.
TOBACCO AND TOBACCO PRODUCTS (SIC 5194)
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of tobacco and
its products. Leaf tobacco wholesalers are classified in Industry 5159, and
establishments primarily engaged in stemming and redrying tobacco are
classified in Manufacturing, Industry 2141.
PAINTS, VARNISHES, AND SUPPLIES (SIC 5198)
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of paints,
varnishes, wallpaper, and supplies. Establishments selling to the general
public and known as retail in the trade are classified in Retail trade,
Industry 5231.
NONDURABLE GOODS, NOT ELSEWHERE CLASSIFIED (SIC 5199)
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of nondurable
goods, not elsewhere classified, such as art goods, industrial yarns, textile
bags, and bagging and burlap.
SIC 5199 is subdivided in some tables into -
1. Art goods.
2. General merchandise - nondurable.
3. Textile bags and bagging.
4. Specialty advertising (sale of merchandise).
5. Other nondurable goods.
ART GOODS
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of art goods
and souvenirs.
GENERAL MERCHANDISE - NONDURABLE
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of a general
line of nondurable goods with no one line accounting for more than 25 percent
of the total sales.
TEXTILE BAGS AND BAGGING
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of textile
bags, bagging, and burlap including asbestos, canvas, and felt products.
SPECIALTY ADVERTISING (SALE OF MERCHANDISE)
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of specialty
advertising novelties and specialties.
OTHER NONDURABLE GOODS
Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of product
lines not included in any other category.
