The Federal Research Division (FRD) of the Library of Congress published in 1989 an extensive handbook entitled Hungary: a country study. The text and selected graphics of the 320-page work are available in an electronic format on the FRD Web site. The reader can search for words or variants of search words, within one country study or across multiple studies. The country study can be downloaded, one section at a time, and saved as an html or txt file. (No revised editions are planned at present.)

Maintained by the Budapest University of Technology. Contains an image map of the Internet information services in Hungary. Lists WWW servers by geographical location and type of organization. Contains lists of the Hungarian Gopher servers, public FTP servers, and Telnet services. Links to newsgroups, mailing lists, online catalogs, and other national home pages. Provides information about Hungarian history, geography, and cuisine. Describes many of Hungary's cities, towns, and villages. Offers access to an Hungarian-English and English-Hungarian dictionary.

Statistical Resources

Hungarian Central Statistical Office (http://portal.ksh.hu)
The official statistical agency of the Hungarian government. Provides basic demographic, economic, and other statistical information and reports. In English and Hungarian.

CIFP -- Country Indicators for Foreign Policy (http://www.carleton.ca/cifp/)
The CIFP project goes far beyond just foreign policy, covering many aspects of government and society. It was initiated in 1997 by two Canadian institutions: the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) and the Norman Patterson School of International Affairs. The CIFP database includes over one hundred performance indicators for 196 countries, spanning 15 years for most indicators. The data are drawn from open sources, including UN offices, the World Bank, etc, and attempt to measure domestic armed conflict, governance and political instability, militarization, religious and ethnic diversity, demographic stress, economic performance, human development, environmental stress, and international linkages.

InfoNation - International Comparisons (http://www.cyberschoolbus.un.org/infonation/info.asp)
Maintained by the United Nations. Allows the user to select up to five countries and view a comparative statistical chart for them by clicking on one of the following: Overview; Economy, Environment, Health, and Technology. Each of those 5 categories includes several statistical indicators. 'Overview' includes demographic indicators.

Population Index on the Web (http://popindex.princeton.edu)
Population Index is a quarterly periodical which began in 1935. Each issue presents an annotated bibliography of recently published books, journal articles and other materials on population topics. The Web site makes available a bibliographic database of the journal's contents from 1986 to 2000.

Sources of International Statistics on the Internet (http://www.lib.umd.edu/guides/intstat.html)
An excellent, annotated portal for statistics in all fields. Its categories include: U.S. government sources; foreign countries; United Nations system; intergovernmental organizations; non-governmental organizations; academic sources; search engines & metasites. Many of these sites include statistics for Hungary. Maintained by the University of Maryland Libraries.

National Symbols

National Anthem of Hungary (http://www.national-anthems.net/HU/)
For each country's national anthem, the "National-anthems.net" Web site provides an audio file and the lyrics in the national language and in English. Links to additional sites which cover national anthems.
