MiniBooNE Mineral Oil
Technical Specification
VERSION 2 - 7/18/01
Required Oil Properties
This is the technical specification for the Light Mineral Oil
(Industrial NF grade) to be purchased by Fermi
National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL). The quantity needed is 959,900 liters
(253,600 gallons) when measured at 55o F.
The oil must be certified by the manufacturer to have the following properties:
- Density: Specific gravity between .76 and .87 - measured via
ASTM D 4052
or ASTM D 1298 .
- Viscosity: < 34.5 cSt at 40o C (< 172 SUS at 100o F) - measured via ASTM D 445.
- Color: >+30 Saybolt Color units - measured via ASTM D 156.
In addition to these three properties, the oil must meet the
following specification:
- Attenuation of light at 420 nm - The oil must be water clear.
In particular, it must have an attenuation length of
greater than 20 m for 420 nm (blue) light. That means that the amount of
420 nm light transmitted
through a 1.8 m (6 ft) sample must be no less than 92% of that
transmitted through
an .2 m (8 in) sample.
FNAL will test for compliance with this last specification. Only oils that
meet the previous four specifications will be considered.
Additional Properties That Will Be Considered
All oils, whose properties meet the preceding four specifications,
will be evaluated on the basis of the following properties (listed
in decreasing order of importance):
- Long attenuation length over the wavelength range of 320 - 600 nm.
- Low reactivity with materials in our detector.
The mineral oil
should not react with or dissolve any of the following materials:
- Cold rolled steel
- 6061 aluminium
- 5052 aluminium
- Plasite 9060 coating
- Stainless steel
- Sherwin Williams Paints
- Hydralon P waterbased epoxy primer E72AC500/V66VC503
- Jet Glo High Gloss Polyurethane white F91W26/V93V28/V93V2
- Flat black Moisture Cure Polyurethane F93B102
- Teflon
- PVC
- Viton
- Glasses
- Black Masterbond coating (EP21LV)
Note: These materials have been selected to be non-reactive with
mineral oil. To test reactivity,
samples of the above materials will be soaked in the proposed oil at
an elevated temperature (140o F) for a period of 8 hours. Then
the transmission of 310 nm light through a 1 cm sample of the oil will be
compared to that of the pristine oil.
- High index of refraction and small dispersion over the wavelength range of 320-600 nm.
The index of refraction and the dispersion (the change
in index of refraction with wavelength) are usually
functions of the density of the oil with both increasing with
increased density. Impurities in the oils may have a small effect on
the index, but may have a large effect on the dispersion.
- Small amount of scintillation light.
Scintillation light is the isotropic light emitted
when a charged particle passes through the material. In mineral oil,
low scintillation light usually
corresponds to a low level of aromatic or unsaturated
impurities. In particular, while we need the oil stabilized with the
antioxidant, Vitamin E, we would like to keep its concentration as low
as feasible.
Preferred Shipment Method
The mineral oil must be shipped in food grade containers cleaned and
dried prior to filling.
Preferred method of shipment would be rail tankers to the FNAL railhead.
Tankers will be offloaded sequentially in about 4 days each.
An alternative method
of shipment would be truck tank trailers. Such trailers would be offloaded
in about 8 hours.
Final Acceptance Criteria
The
final oil, when delivered, must have the same properties
(density, viscosity, color, attenuation length, reactivity, index of
refraction and dispersion, and amount of scintillation light)
as the
the sample submitted with the bid. The bidder must state how much variation
can be expected between the bid sample and the final product for
density and viscosity.
Prior to shipping, the vendor shall draw a sample from the bottom of
each rail car and perform the following tests per ASTM methods listed:
- Specific Gravity - ASTM D4052 or D1298
- Color - ASTM D156
- Cloud Point - ASTM D2500
- Pour Point - ASTM D97
- Kinematic Viscosity - ASTM D445
- Flash Point - ASTM D92
The test results must be faxed to the site manager at FNAL prior to
shipping. Each car is to be sealed and the seal numbers shall appear
on the bill of lading. A certificate of analysis shall accompany each
tank car.
Once at Fermilab, the oil in each container will be tested again to make sure
that the oil delivered is similar to that submitted with the proposal.
Should any container's oil significantly deviate from the proposal sample's
properties, that container will be rejected. It will be the vendor's
responsibility to pick up the rejected oil and replace it.
Should the vendor request it, FNAL is willing to discuss testing the oil
at the vendor's site prior to filling into containers.
Ideal Oil Properties
The ideal oil would have a specific gravity in the upper portion (> .83) of the
range specified under "required properties"
and a viscosity between 12 cST at 40o C (70 SUS at 100o F) and 18 cSt at 40o C (100 SUS at 100o F). For
oils with the same specific gravity, we would opt for the lower viscosity.
Long attenuation lengths for blue, purple, and near ultraviolet light is
of paramount importance to us.
