Tebet N, Weinstein AL, Souza M, Weinstein C, Carioca J, Aquino M, Simone C; International Conference on AIDS.

Int Conf AIDS. 2000 Jul 9-14; 13: abstract no. WePeE4910.

N. Tebet, Grupo PELA VIDDA Niterfi, Rua Presidente Domiciano, 150, Niterfi - Rio de Janeiro, 24210-271, Brazil, Tel.: +55 21 719-3793, Fax: +55 21 719-5683, E-mail: gpvnit@pelavidda-niteroi.org.br

Issue: Niteroi is the second city in the State of Rio de Janeiro in cases of AIDS. Psychiatric services in the city lack a specific prevention program for the population that has a high degree of vulnerability to the epidemics. Description: Grupo PELA VIDDA/Niteroi is an NGO/AIDS which, in a partnership with the Jurujuba Mental Hospital (JMH), elaborated a pilot project on mental health and AIDS with the sponsorship of the Brazilian Health Ministry. The first step was a series of awareness-raising lectures to the JMH staff. Following that, there was the implementation of an advanced training program on STD/AIDS for 47 JMH technicians, together with a series of information workshops and drama workshops for JMH users, with the joint coordination of technicians from both institutions. Conclusion: The success of the project brought about its renewal in the following year, with the inclusion of other activities. It also showed it is feasible to challenge the myth that it is impossible to work with mental hospital users towards raising their awareness of their own sexuality and their responsibility in preventing of STDs.
