1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Purpose

The SIR-C CEOS Tape Reader software is designed specifically for reading SIR-C CEOS tape, accessing its individual image and data files, and converting data file contents into readable text format. This document accompanies the SIR-C CEOS Tape Reader software which is able to run on UNIX and VAX/VMS operating systems.

1.2 Scope

This document describes the steps necessary to install the CEOS Tape Reader software provided on high density 8mm Exabyte tape onto disk, build the executable, and run the program. This document also describes the function of each option in the menu items and expected outputs from CEOS Reader program. The last section which is section 8 shows how to extract the SAR Image Data File only from tape to disk. The layout of SIR-C CEOS Exabyte tape is shown in Appendix A. Appendix B contains the description of SIR-C CEOS file and the output files in ASCII format. Appendix C contains the SIR-C CEOS data file definition. Finally, Appendix D includes a sample of output files in text format.

2 MINIMUM REQUIREMENT ON HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE CONFIGURATION

2.1 Minimum Requirement On Hardware And Software Configuration

The minimum hardware and software configuration required to install the CEOS Tape Reader software, compile, execute the program, and store output data on disk are:

* Minimum memory size of 2 MB.

* A high density, 8mm tape device (e.g. Exabyte drive model EXB-8500 or compatible).

* A minimal disk space of 6 MB is required to store the CEOS Reader software and to transfer CEOS files from tape to disk. For operational use, the additional disk space needed depends on the image file size. Average image file sizes are: 200 MB for multi-look detected, 400 MB for multi-look complex, and 600 MB for single-look complex.

* ANSI C compiler.

3 INSTALLING SOFTWARE

This section describes the procedures on how to install SIR-C CEOS Tape Reader software on UNIX and VAX/VMS systems. The following files should appear in the sub-directory called 'ceos_reader' after installing the software onto the disk:

Source files : ceos_reader.c

4 BUILDING EXECUTABLE

4.1 Building 'ceos_reader' Executable On UNIX System

Go to sub-directory called ceos_reader. There is a make file called ceos_reader.make used for compiling the source files and creating the executable file. An ANSI C compatible compiler is required for compilation.

To build the executable ceos_reader on a UNIX compatible system, type:

make -f ceos_reader.make

The make file uses "acc" command to compile source files. If a different C compiling command is used, then specify according to the following example:

make -f ceos_reader.make CC=cc

Note: Ignore the warning messages.

4.2 Building 'ceos_reader' Executable On VAX/VMS System

Go to sub-directory called ceos_reader. There is a command file ceos_reader.com used for compiling the source files and creating the executable file. ANSI C compatible compiler is required for compilation.

To build the executable ceos_reader on VAX/VMS system, type:

@ceos_reader

5 RUNNING PROGRAM

There are two ways to run the ceos_reader program; either with data on Exabyte tape or with data on disk.

Note: For the VAX/VMS system, it is necessary to create a symbol for the 'ceos_reader' program as below:

ceos_reader :== $disk:[directory_path_of_executable]ceos_reader.exe

5.1 Running 'ceos_reader' Program For Data On Exabyte Tape

* Load the SIR-C CEOS-formatted Exabyte tape into the tape drive.

* Run 'ceos_reader' program by typing:

ceos_reader tape=tape_device_name

4. SAR Trailer File: For SIR-C, this file contains simply the file descriptor record because all the information are stored in SAR Leader file.

5. Null Volume Directory File: This file contains only the null volume descriptor record to indicate the end of the data volume.

Below is the description of SIR-C CEOS output files in ASCII format and plot data files:

1. SAR Leader File_ascii: This file contains the text format of File Descriptor Record, Data Set Summary Record, Map Projection Data Record, Platform Position Record, Attitude Data Record, Radiometric Data Record, Radiometric Compensation Record, Data Quality Summary Record, Data Histograms Record, Range Spectra Record, Radar Parameter Update Data Record, Detailed Processing Parameter Record, and Calibration Data Record of SAR Leader File.

2. SAR Imagery Options Record_ascii: This file contains the text format of file descriptor record of SAR Data File.

3. SAR Data File_image: This file contains compressed Image data OR SAR Data File_HH/_HV/_VV/_VH: These four files contains raw data of Reformatted Signal Data Records

4. SAR Trailer File_ascii: This file contains the text format of file descriptor record of SAR Trailer File.

56. Radiometric Compensation plot data files (prXXXXX_radioplot_ZWW) : These files contain data of Radiometric Compensation record in (x,y) format. The (x,y) pairs are tab-delimited

6. Data Histogram plot data files (prXXXXX_histoplot_YYY_ZWW) : These files contain data of Data Histogram record in (x,y) format. The (x,y) pairs are tab-delimited

7. Range Spectra plot data files (prXXXXX_spectraplot_ZWW) : These files contain data of Range Spectra record in (x,y) format. The (x,y) pairs are tab-delimited

(Where XXXXX : Processing run number

YYY : Image or Raw (IMA or RAW)
