OBJECTIVE: To monitor HIV prevalence trend over time by groups and regions in Morocco in order to assess current preventive measures as well as to implement others means for fighting HIV/AIDS. Materiel and methods: HIV sentinel surveillance in Morocco is carried out by unlinked anonymous HIV testing procedures. Groups studied are patients who attend for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI), pregnant women (PW), male prisoners (MP), female prisoners (FP) and female sex workers (FSK). RESULTS: table 1 CONCLUSION: HIV prevalence among STI group compared to the previous studies seems to be stabilised. Due to the fact that HIV screening was carried out only for few sites the prevalence can not be generalized for all pregnant women nor compared. Concerning MP, FP and FSK groups, they are just included this year in the HIV sentinel surveillance process. Until now FSK has been the group which shows the highest HIV prevalence in Morocco, but the fact that the size of samples is low should be taken into account. [table: see text]
