Introduction

As information was gathered for the framework survey, it became convenient to organize the information into a database so that we could easily refer back to useful sites. Gradually, the database evolved into a set of categories for classifying the type of system we were examining. This bibliography represents the database broken down into the major categories including the following:

The definitions for documents and organizations are clear. It is more difficult, however, to distinguish between projects and the tools developed by the projects. The distinction between a framework, a language, and a tool is also not very clear, as some systems defy easy classification. Notwithstanding these difficulties, we cast our net far and wide to gather information pertaining to the development of an Earth System Modeling Framework. This document represents a snapshot into the information we considered before producing our report.
