Research Interest

The Berkeley Bioinformatics Open-source Projects (BBOP) is a diverse group of scientific researchers and software engineers dedicated to developing tools and applying computational technologies to solve biological problems.

Our group is focused on the development, use, and integration of ontolgies into biological data analysis. We are interested in the management of large-scale biological data: describing it rigorously using ontologies; designing databases that are flexible enough to be easily maintained; quickly searching and accurately retrieving data; and presenting it effectively to researchers and biologists. We believe that the only way to develop effective software is through user-centered design. In broad terms, user-centered design (UCD) is a design philosophy and a process in which the needs, wants, and limitations of the end user of an interface or document are given extensive attention at each stage of the design process. We have biologists on our development team so that the software designers get to know their needs.

Members of the group contribute to a number of projects, including the Gene Ontology, the National Center for Biomedical Ontology, modENCODE, and the Generic Model Organism Database Project.
