BACKGROUND: Surveillance of antimicrobial-resistance (AR) is needed for the empiric treatment and to control spread of AR bacteria. The previous 4 nationwide surveillances in Korea showed increases of vancomycin (VAN)-R E. faecium, fluoroquinolone (FQN)-R Enterobacteriaceae, and imipenem (IPM)-R P. aeruginosa (PAE). Aim of this study was to analyze the trend of above-mentioned R in particular. METHODS: The susceptibility test data in 2001 at 31 Korean hospitals were collected. The methods of test were NCCLS disk diffusion at 21 hospitals and microbroth dilution at 9 hospitals. One hospital with poor quality control records, and <20 isolates per species were excluded from the analysis. RESULTS: The R rates of gram-negative bacilli are shown in the table. [table: see text] R rate of K. pneumoniae (27%) to ceftazidime (CAZ) remained similar to those of the previous 4 years. R rates of Enterobacteriaceae to cefepime (FEP) were lower than those to CAZ. IPM-R PAE remained prevalent (17%), while IPM-R acinetobacters (ACI) increased from 5% to 8%. The R rates to FQN increased from 24% to 28% in E. coli, and from 56% to 64% in ACI. Ampicillin-R H. influenzae remained prevalent (64%). R rate of S. aureus to methicillin (70%) and that of S. pneumoniae to oxacillin (72%) remained high. VAN R rate of E. faecium increased from 4% to 16%. IPM-R PAE and VAN-R E. faecium were present in all hospitals in Seoul and 9 of 11 <1000-bed hospitals located in non-Seoul areas. CONCLUSIONS: Significant increase of VAN-R E. faecium, gradual increase of FQN-R E. coli, continued prevalence of IPM-R PAE, and emergence of IPM-R ACI are observed at many Korean hospitals in 2001.
