1997年4月23日總統公布修正律師法第三條及第七條條文。要點如下： 1.增列「曾任公設辯護人六年以上」資格者，得免予訓練，以檢覈方式充任律師。(第3條) 2.增訂公設辯護人無須完成職成訓練即得辦理登錄。(第7條)

The amendment of 23 April 1997 applies to the Lawyer Law. The essential points are: 1) To specify that a ROC citizen having served as a public defender more than six years shall be eligible to become a lawyer (Article 3) 2) To specify that the requirement of undergoing training before practicing law could be waived if the lawyer had once served as a public defendant.
