Sierra Club on the Record Supporting High Gas Prices and the Dems' Latest "No Energy" Plan ... Notice a Connection?
Radical Special Interest Allies Applaud Democrats' Latest "No Energy" Bill Loaded with Poison Pills

Washington, Aug 19, 2008 - Speaker Pelosi’s latest scheme to block the will of the House and that of American families, seniors, and small businesses who favor an “all of the above” energy plan to lower gas prices has become clear over the last few days.  Much as she has shut down debate to ensure House Republicans could not offer pro-American energy proposals and derailed the annual appropriations process to block environmentally-safe drilling far off our shores, the Speaker is now drafting a new “energy plan” in secret, while loading it with enough poison pills to ensure its defeat.  Why?  Because she doesn’t want to give Congress a simple up-or-down vote on the American Energy Act (H.R. 6566), House Republicans’ comprehensive bill to lower gas prices by increasing production of American energy, promoting more conservation and efficiency, and encouraging the use of more alternative and renewable fuels.

Not surprisingly, some of the Democratic Majority’s closest special interest allies are complicit in this latest “no energy” scheme.  At the top of that list: the Sierra Club, a radical, anti-American energy organization which has contributed nearly $75,000 and dished out nearly $45,000 in independent expenditures for Democrats during this election cycle, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.  In a statement last Friday, the Sierra Club embraced the Speaker’s latest “energy” gambit:

“The new legislation that Speaker Pelosi has outlined includes crucial clean energy solutions and other important measures that will make America more energy independent, offer consumers relief at the pump, and will force drilling supporters to admit whether they really want to move America forward or simply want to continue helping the oil companies.”

The Sierra Club endorsement is proof positive that the Democrats’ latest “no energy” plan is just that: a ruse intended solely to provide political cover to vulnerable Democrats who have consistently opposed more American energy.  After all, would a liberal, anti-American energy organization applaud legislation that would make a real difference by producing more American energy and helping bring down prices at the pump?  Of course not … because the Sierra Club is on record asserting that America is “better off without cheap gas.”  And since the Speaker is so intent on blocking an “all of the above” plan that would finally lead to lower fuel costs, it’s only logical that the radicals at the Sierra Club would praise her tactics.

Meanwhile, House Republicans continue their historic nationwide gas prices protest on the floor of the U.S. House and in communities across the country.  In an op-ed published in today’s Washington Times, House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) promised the unprecedented revolt would continue until the House returns to session for a vote on a real “all of the above” energy plan – not the scheme Speaker Pelosi outlined last weekend:

“The House Republicans’ unprecedented nationwide gas-prices protest is now in its third full week.  My Republican colleagues and I have vowed to continue the historic uprising – in Washington and in communities across the country – until the House returns to session for a vote on the American Energy Act, our ‘all of the above’ plan to lower gas prices.  Whether that means ending the protest tomorrow or next month is up to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, California Democrat.  While the speaker used a radio address last weekend to unveil yet another flawed plan that will do little to lower gas prices, she remained silent about bringing Congress back to Washington from its summer recess to deal with the No. 1 issue on the minds of the American people.”

With gas prices remaining high and home heating costs expected to rise this autumn and winter as well, congressional Democrats have aligned themselves with radical groups like the Sierra Club in support of a mutual agenda of high gas prices and less American energy.  In contrast, poll after poll shows the American people favor more American energy to bring down the price at the pump – which is a cornerstone of the House GOP’s American Energy ActHow much longer will Speaker Pelosi and her Democratic colleagues continue to defy the will of American families, seniors, and small businesses to do the bidding of their special interest allies on the Left?
