FOL Comalapa Brings Joy to Orphanage in El Salvador

Press Release
March 25, 2008

On March 14, service members from Forward Operating Location (FOL) Comalapa carried out a Community Relations project at the “Hogar del Niño Minusválido Abandonado Vito Guarato” Orphanage on the outskirts of San Salvador, El Salvador.

FOL Comalapa personnel and members of Patrol Squadrons VP-46, VP-9, and CMO-2 along with U.S. and Salvadoran Contractors (PAE, DYNCORP) raised donations to help pay utility bills and to buy needed items such as socks, wash cloths, detergent, and powdered milk  requested by the orphanage.

The volunteers raised over $3,500 in a period of a few days and bought the needed items for the orphanage, which takes in children who are either physically or mentally disabled.  The money raised also paid for pizza, boxes of juice, and a clown for the children’s entertainment.

“The event turned out to be spectacular,” said FOL Comalapa Executive Officer Lieutenant. Commander Carlos Gomez, “I was pleased to see so many volunteers from the FOL’s permanent party, U.S. Contractors, Salvadoran employees and especially the PATRON Detachment who made the event so special to the orphans.”

FOL Comalapa has conducted several Community Relations projects within the last few months, including building new homes with the Habitat for Humanity program, and delivering Project Handclasp medical supplies and hygiene items to local residents in need.

FOL Comalapa's primary mission is to provide logistical support to aerial counter-drug aircraft and their crews from U.S. military and government law enforcement organizations and to promote Theater Security Cooperation like Community Relations events in the El Salvador area.
