Seismicity Report for Northern California, the Nation, and the World for the week of December 24 - 30, 1997 Stephen R. Walter U.S. Geological Survey 345 Middlefield Rd. MS-977, Menlo Park, CA 94025 NOTE: Because of the New Year Holiday, this report was compiled one day early. It covers the seven-day period from December 24 - 30. Next week's report will cover the eight-day period from December 31 - January 7. San Francisco Bay Area During the seven-day period ending at midnight on Tuesday, December 30, 1997 the U.S. Geological Survey office in Menlo Park recorded 14 earthquakes of magnitude one (M1) and greater within the San Francisco Bay area shown in Figure 1. Four were as large as M2.0. This total compares to nine earthquakes during the prior six-day period (December 18 - 23), none of which were as large as M2. The week's largest earthquake occurred Tuesday morning on the San Andreas fault about five miles northeast of Watsonville (#2/1). It was felt locally and was followed minutes later by a M1.8 aftershock. The most recent comparable event in this location was a M3.3 that occurred in May, 1994. Other earthquakes of note include a pair of M2's Sunday evening on the central Calaveras fault east of San Jose (#1/1) and a M2.8 on the creeping segment of the San Andreas just southeast of San Juan Bautista (#3/1). Northern & Central California The largest earthquake in the region, outside of the Long Valley area, was a M3.2 subduction event on Sunday evening (#8/2). This epicenter of this 31-km-deep event was located about the same distance (20 miles) east of Arcata. It was preceded 33 minutes earlier by a 23-km-deep M2.5 whose epicenter was about 25 km farther south, about 25 miles southeast of Arcata (#7/2). Other activity in the Cape Mendocino area included a trio of M2 events near the coast (#1/2) and a M2.7 about 40 miles offshore. Other earthquakes of note in northern California included a M2.2 six miles southeast of Willows that occurred Saturday morning at a depth of about 25 km (#4/2) and a M2.0 just north of Clear Lake late Monday evening (#9/2). Central California was quiet with only two earthquakes as large as M2. Both occurred on the creeping segment of the San Andreas just northwest of the Pinnacles, the largest a M3.2 just after midnight on Sunday (#6/2). Activity in the Sierra Nevada Range included four events in the Markleeville area as large as M2, the largest a M3.1 (#2/2), a M2.4 ten miles south of Mariposa (#3/2), and a M2.5 in the White Mountains about 16 miles east of Bishop (#5/2). Long Valley Caldera Activity in the caldera continued to decline early in the week but then increased again following a M4.3 on Monday that occurred south of the caldera (#3/3). An even more active sequence began on Wednesday following a M4.8 near the airport (This sequence occurred after this reporting period ended at midnight on Tuesday and will be discussed in next week's summary). Activity in the caldera remained concentrated in two area along the south side of the resurgent dome. One zone, just east of Mammoth Lakes, experienced about a dozen M2 earthquakes during the week, most on Monday night/early Tuesday morning. More active was the zone east of the airport where at least 50 M2 earthquakes occurred, four of which were as large as M3.0 (#1/3). Monday's M4.3 was the first earthquake as large as M4 since late November. It produced 14 aftershocks as large as M2.0 over the following four hours before quieting down. USA Seismicity (December 21 - 30) Only one notable earthquake occurred in the lower 48 states outside of California. This M2.6 event occurred in southern Arkansas and was reported felt in the town of El Dorado and Parkers Chapel (#1/4). A M3.6 occurred seven miles southwest of Niland, California at the southern end of the Salton Sea (#2/4). It was the largest in a small earthquake cluster that began Tuesday evening and that continued into Wednesday afternoon. The Planet Earth (December 21 - 30) The week was comparatively quiet with no large earthquakes on the planet. The largest event was a M5.8 along the Myanmar/China border (#5/5). Moderate earthquakes of note included a M5.3 near the coast of Chiapas, Mexico (#1/5), a M5.4 in the Tonga Islands (#2/5), a M5.5 in the New Ireland region (#3/5), and a M5.3 south of Africa (#4/5).
