OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of Functional Level (FL) and biopsychosocial assessment among HIV-infected patients (HIV+). METHODS: 100 HIV+ and a group of control subjects at risk for HIV infection (HIV-) were examined as regards the FL (DSM-III-R Axis V) and the following variables related to it: Stressfull Life Events (A), Biomedical Impairment (B), Coping Skills (C), Socioeconomical and Cultural Level (D) and Environmental Support (E) according to the "Equation of FL" model by Gordon et al. (1988). RESULTS: HIV+ showed a significantly worse FL (low FL: 39%; medium FL: 58%; high FL: 3%) as compared to HIV- (low FL: 13%; medium FL: 60%; high FL: 27%). HIV+ had a significantly low D and E as compared to HIV-: HIV+ had a significantly lower D degree (low D: 50%; medium D: 32%; high D: 18%) than HIV- (low D: 17%; medium D: 44%; high D: 39%) while HIV+ drug-addicts had a significantly worse E (low E: 80%; medium E: 14%; high E: 6%) than HIV- drug-addicts (low E: 0%; medium E: 22%; high E: 78%). CONCLUSION: Our results confirmed that HIV+ had worse FL than HIV- and showed that HIV-seropositivity is especially associated with low D and low E.
