Summary
The monitoring of substantial changes in the forests of the tropical belt of the Earth presents a formidable yet vital challenge for the remote sensing community. In order to address this issue a project was initiated in 1991 by the Space Applications Institute (SAI) (now the Institute for Environment and Sustainability) within the Joint Research Center ... (JRC) of the European Commission in Ispra/Italy. This project, entitled TREES (Tropical Ecosystem Environment observation by Satellite), is oriented towards the study of tropical forest dynamics at regional to global scales using remote sensing techniques. TREES is a joint project of the Commission of the European Union and the European Space Agency concerned with the development of space observation techniques for improved mapping and monitoring of the tropical forests of the world. Data derived from various satellites, such as the NOAA AVHRR low spatial resolution instrument, ESA ERS-1 / -2 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) instrument, as well as Landsat-TM and SPOT are considered. The optical and thermal channel imagery of the AVHRR instruments are used for regional scale mapping and condition determination of tropical forest (over South East Asia, Indonesia, Central and West Africa and South and Central America). Higher spatial resolution optical imagery is used to verify the patterns observed, and the classifications derived from the AVHRR imagery. Tools for processing the ERS SAR data have been developed and are tested on various sites. A Mosiac of SAR Imagery from the ERS satellites is being prepared for the entire Congo Basin. In addition a coherent geographical information system - Tropical Forest Information System (TFIS) - has been developed to meet the project's needs for data evaluation and coordination of data processing. The project is split into two phases: - TREES-1 phase comprises data collection, data evaluation, tool development, definition of intermediate / final products and presentation of results. This phase was successfully concluded in December 1994, - TREES-2 phase comprises continuation of data collection and initiation of a Monitoring Phase. Presently the project has just entered phase II. The JRC has invested considerable time and resources for the collection of appropriate data (e.g. cloudefree data from optical sensors) from various sites . The following table describes the AVHRR data acquisitions to date (June 1995) and will be subject to change in the future: Platform / Sensor-------South East Asia------Africa---------South America NOAA/AVHRR (90-94)----------320---------------250---------------130---- The TREES Phase 1 products are to be released on CD-ROM. The beta version is in test and final versions will be released in September 1995. Contact Dr. Frederic Achard, TREES, GVM Unit, JRC 21020 Ispra.
