The current steel group

What have we done this month?

• One plane prototype (1pp) was hung in the New Muon Lab (8/6/98)
  • The hanging went without hitch.

  • The first, coarse, surveying was completed. The results are consistent with the plane's specs in the region below the ears. Above the ears we did not expect to meet specs because the plane is not attached to a bookend structure. The current version is supported by an I beam.

  • Strain gauges in the ears of the plane gave some encouraging results before they both broke. One of the gauges broke before the plane was lifted and the other broke just before the plane was finally placed on the rails.
    

• Near Detector Steel Design
  • The design has been slightly modified from the version presented at Ely. The steel is now 150" wide since that is the largest rolling machines available in the US. The return side of the steel has been widened to reduce the the amount of current required to generate a ~1.5T field in the target region. The amount of steel was increased by roughly a half meter.

• Near Detector Coil Design
  • New magnetic calculations have specified that the ND current should be 40kA. (See a link on www.hep.umn.edu/minos for field maps.) A significant amount of work has been done on the design and costing of the near detector coil. The design uses 48 rectangular turns of Al conductor. (See the new TDR chapter for more information or http://www.hep.umn.edu/~jkn/steel/nd_conductor.ps for a cross section.)
  • Aluminum conductor was chosen based on the significantly reduced weight which makes installation easier. Criteria studied in the decision: Construction, materials cost, installation, and operating costs.
  • Standard FNAL conductor analysis programs show that we expect the surface of the conductors to be 4.5 degrees C above ambient temperature.   Further study is expected to show that the scintillator will see a much smaller change in temperature.
  • The coil is powered by a (input and output filtered) standard FNAL 1000A switching supply.
    

• Far Detector Coil Design
  • New design using ~160 turns of 1/0 gauge stranded copper conductor. This conductor is used in many applications including electrical distribution, welding, appliances. The coil is cooled using copper refrigeration tubing and a cooling jacket. (See the new TDR chapter for more information or http://www.hep.umn.edu/~jkn/steel/fd_coil.ps for a cross section.)
  • Detailed thermal analysis shows that the expected temperature in the skin of the cooling jacket will be below room temperature, depending on the chilled water temperature. See NuMI-L-411 (still in progress).  The thermal analysis procedure was tested by comparing results of calculations to a 1m model coil with small wire.  Results agree to better than 10% lending confidence to the calculations. 
  • The coil is powered by a (input and output filtered) standard FNAL 100A switching supply.

• New clamping design for the far detector strongback
  • At the August MINOS meeting Jim showed a design of the clamps which will hold the steel to the strongback without interfering with the scintillator while it is being erected.  These are catalog components.

• Thoughts on a simplified compression rig.
  • Results from welding the 1pp seem to indicate that the 20,000lb compression rig may be over kill.  One attractive idea is to replace it with a mass which could be moved by the gantry cranes at the workstations. If tests with 2.54cm planes verify this we may be able to save some far detector installation labor.

• Weekly Steel and Coil Meetings
  • The meeting are held at FNAL 11SW meeting room.  The meetings are currently on Thursdays. All are invited. Check for meeting times.

• Going ahead on purchase of steel for the 4PP.
  • Discussions at the last SOAC meeting and with the PM group have led us to go ahead with the purchase of the steel for the 4PP.
    

• Appointment of 4PP Task Force (4PPTF).
  • Stan proposed a committee who's charge is to develop a R&D plane for the 4PP over the next two years.  Membership is:
