Abstract This paper presents the analytical and experimental methods in the prediction of dynamic responses of supertankers moored at offshore marine terminals subjectd to wave action. Primary emphasis was given to the determination of the response operators of ship motions in six degrees of freedom, mooring forces, and impact forces exerted on the breasting and mooring dolphins. The effects of elastic characteristics of dolphin-fender system, and of mooring lines on these parameters and on virtual mass and virtal moments of inertia are discussed. Comparison of theoretical and experimental values of ship motions is made. The experimental results include those of a 1:40 scale model of 200,000 DWT tanker measured at the Osaka City University and 1:100 scale model study being conducted at the J.K.K. Look Laboratory of Oceanographic Engineering, University of Hawaii.
